1999 Winston 500 at Talladega.

Jerry Nadeau was in contention to win the $1M bonus and running 2nd with 5 laps to go. They kept showing the fan that could also win $1M if Nadeau won. Imagine the heartbreak to be that close to winning $1M as a fan that close to the end of the race only to see your driver drop way out of contention at the end.

Why did they have so much trouble with ignition boxes back then? Seems like every race drivers had to switch to a backup ignition.

Earnhardt in victory lane savvily and subtly turning his bottle of Coke during the interview so the full Coca-Cola logo could be seen on camera.

Youtube has a bunch of full replays of older races. I love watching them.

I've watched the the 1995 Winston 2000 Winston 2000 Diehard, 1999 Daytona 500 and 98 Pepsi 400 in the last 3 days.

The old races are cool and some of the satellite ones are even commercial free. Young Gordon was more a terror at these tracks than I remembered. That move in 1999 was insane.

Probably will go back to the Middle 2000s to see how Gordon and Jr dominated.

They were required to run off the shelf MSD boxes and despite the ones they used (IIRC 6ALN) being designed for heat and vibration it wasn't the heat and vibration they saw in NASCAR over 100s of miles. These were boxes you could buy from your local parts house or places like Summit.

Funny during that era I ran 7AL2 boxes on my drag cars which is a step up from the 6 series boxes.

Second place with five laps to go at Talladega is nothing.

Winston 25th Nascar anniversary 1999 Daytona

Fan Question: RCR-058 can you tell us the history on this chassis? Was it new when it had the Taz paint scheme on it or was it was it an older chassis?

The Dale Earnhardt Archive
@ArchivesDe

Ok, I’ll answer that question!

Chassis RCR-058 is kind of an interesting car to say the least as it is actually two different famous Dale Earnhardt driven race cars!

This car is perhaps best known as being the No Bull Million Dollar winner and the last car Dale ever won in, coming from 18th to 1st at Talladega in just a handful of laps for the million dollar win, but it is also the vastly popular ‘Taz’ themed red car from the 2000 Daytona 5oo.

That’s right, Chassis RCR-058 is both the last win car and the Taz car.

Chassis RCR-058 first rolled out of the RCR race shop in October of 1999 and was in service as a super speedway car for just over a year before it was retired and has been pretty much a show car at RCR since Dale died in February 2001.

Here is a brief history of Chassis RCR-058:

-October 1999: Talladega (Testing)

-November 1999: Talladega (Testing)

-January 2000: Talladega (Testing)

-January 2000: Daytona (Testing)

-February 2000: Daytona Twin 125’s

-February 2000: Daytona 500 – Started 21st, finished 21st (Had best Chevy until got in a wreck with Jimmy Spencer with less than 10 laps left)

-February/March 2000: Taz body cut off car to be shipped out and cut into little pieces (The Dale Earnhardt Archive is the number one source of everything Dale) to be used as race metal inserts for 1:64 die-cast ‘Taz’ car blister packs

-April 2000: Talladega (Testing)

-April 2000: Talladega (DieHard 500) – Started 4th, finished 3rd

-July 2000: Daytona (Pepsi 400) – started 18th, finished 8th

-August 2000: Daytona (Test for NASCAR)

-October 2000: Talladega (Winston 500) – Started 20th, finished 1st (No Bull Million Dollar Winner)

-January 2001: Daytona (Testing)

-February 2001: Daytona 500 (Back-up Car)

-Some time shortly after February 2001 Chassis RCR-058 was retired, restored back to the No Bull Million Dollar Winston 500 winning paint scheme, and placed into the RCR show car division and then later into the RCR museum.

I couple years back I watched half of the 2001 Winston Cup Series. That was a fantastic season despite Dale’s death.

Here’s an interesting chart showing who wins title if Nascar had kept the old Winston Cup points format. Quite a difference compared to Chase format. Kevin Harvin would have 4 titles.

I've heard that they used to give out cartons of cigarettes at these events when it was still sponsored by Winston.

Dang, Hamlin still wouldn’t have a championship.

Jeff Gordon would be the biggest beneficiary

Yes and Jimmy Johnson would only have 3. Nascar changed their racing history with the Chase. Bell would have 2 in a row too.

Carl deserved that one in 2011 since he was consistent throughout the season.

Brad in 2012 and MTJ in 2018 had great seasons so glad they reciprocated their championships in this format. Kyle B. In 2018 too

Every driver at HMS wins in a row expect for Bowman.

Dale Jr. still doesn’t have a championship

Honestly, with JJ only having 3 championships coupled with his quiet, businesslike demeanor, I believe JJ would almost be forgotten in 2026.

Gordon would have 7. Jimmie 3. Kenseth and Smoke 2 each. Bell would be a B2B defending champ.

Logano would have zero. Interesting

Yes. And imagine the different racing press and pundits discussions had the format not been changed. Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick would have 11 between them.

One other side note, I miss the top 5 and top 10 listings you don’t see that anymore when they report points. It shows consistent performance over the year.

Logano 3 titles is the weakest ones ever in the sport. He solely got them due to chase and lucking into the chase twice at last minute. His last title he missed the chase but some late Nascar “after the race” decisions allowed him to sneak in. His titles were all gifts.

I hate the chase and how it ruined the history of what shoulda been.

Wasn't that the year him and Smoke were in a literal tie at the end and Smoke won the title because he had more top-5's?
