This. The gi prevented opponents' ability to hold him. He knew it and took advantage of it. Just wearing tights, he's still good but not nearly the same.
That isn’t what a gi is for

Ufc today might as well be child's play.
Damn that’s dumb as hell

I was a much bigger MMA fan during the late 90s, both Pride and the UFC.
Do you think some of that has to maybe do with your age?

Either way, the gi wasn’t the deciding factor when he fought Matt Hughes
This was in 2005. UFC 60 I want to say.
From this fight (2005) up to 2009 where Machida vs Evans (UFC 98) were the best overall fights in my opinion.
I still watch UFC but I feel fighters like BJ Penn, Randy Couture and Georges St-Pierre were absolutely must watch television.
I enjoyed the Anderson Silva domination era but I feel like the overall sport at that moment was lacking quality fighters.

Some of those early events had painfully boring fights too. Lived in Denver and had a buddy into kickboxing who took me to the Ultimate Ultimate and that was horrible.

Is this the one with Jim Brown wearing his stupid hat and having no idea what he's talking about?

Ton of big draws in that era. Fedor, Cro Cop, Anderson Silva, GSP, BJ Penn, Couture, Chuck, Rampage, Dan Henderson, Sakuraba in Japan, almost all of the top Chute Boxe guys, etc, etc.

Thanks for correcting that bit of misinformation. Royce wanted opponents to have his gi to grab on to.
As revoutionary as early UFC was, it was a total geekshow, and the superfights were horrible. No time limits and fighters (Dan Severn) who couldn't finish people. It singlehandledly destroyed traditional martial arts clubs.
UFC has come so far in such a short amount of time. Fighters now are among the most elitely conditioned atheletes of all time.

Maybe it's just because of my age, but I 100% look at that as the golden age of MMA.
BJ Penn coming out with the belt they stripped from him
Tito and Chuck
Chuck and Randy
Rampage Jackson, Mirko Crocop, Fedor, and the Nogs over in Pride
That welterweight division with GSP, Hughs, Penn when he felt like it, Serra.
Silva's dominance
Faber down in the WEC

Went to shite with Lesnar, Kimbo, and bitch fights

The streets (and Rampage Jackson's left knee) will always remember.

I felt like it was the golden age as well

People who say the opposite have obviously never done BJJ before.
The GI can be a big liability for someone. There are so many places an opponent can grab and hold on. Not to mention there are so many chokes and submissions made for the gi.
I think it’s part of why no gi has become so popular. It’s much harder to grab a sweaty dude in a rash guard.

If you guys want to see the worst (or best if you are a sick mofo) ending to a UFC fight………..look up Keith Hackney in UFC 4 vs Joe Son. I feel like Apollo Creeds Trainer Begging Rocky to throw in the towel when I see that one.

It was nuts in the early days

Frankie Edgar was also fun to watch in this era
