Revisiting the GOAT NBA playoffs of the last decade
Posted on 5/14/19 at 1:14 pm

I’ll start by saying I’m biased. I am a lifelong Mavericks fan. However, anytime I look back on the 2011 playoffs the teams are so much more balanced and a number of teams had a legit chance to win it all.
Below is the bracket and how it played out for those that don’t remember.
Notable 2011 Championship odds to win the Finals
Memphis - 200/1
OKC - 15/1
Magic - 12/1
Mavericks - 12/1
Bulls - 5/1
Spurs - 7/2
Boston - 5/2
Miami - 5/2
Lakers - 9/5
First round notes:
- An 8 seed in Memphis takes down San Antonio. The series marked not only the franchise’s first ever playoff win in a single game, but also a series.
- The other ‘upset’, in terms of seeding, was #5 Atlanta over #4 Orlando, a team that made the Finals two seasons earlier.
- The Memphis series marked the first time that no first round series went to a Game 7 since the current format was introduced. Also, the 2011 Playoffs was the first time since 2007 that only one series went to a Game 7.
Round two notes
- Dallas sweeps title favorites LA, ultimately ending Phil Jackson’s coaching career.
- Memphis shows it wasn’t a fluke by pushing a young OKC team, featuring KD, Harden, Ibaka, Perkins and Russ to seven games.
- The new big three in Miami cruises by the OG non-draft built superteam in 5 games
Conference finals
- The East concludes as most people thought it would, but everyone wanted to believe in D-Rose and Chicago.
- the coming out party for a young OKC team ends short due to the Tall Baller from G dropping 48 points in game 1, including making 24 straight FT’s, and another 40 in an OT win in game 4 where Dallas trailed by 15 points with five minutes remaining.
The Finals
- It was the first time since 2006 that neither the Los Angeles Lakers nor the San Antonio Spurs represented the Western Conference in the Finals and only the second time since 1998, and also the thirteenth consecutive NBA Finals to feature a Western Conference Champion from either the states of California or Texas.
- The Mavs' 15-point comeback in game two was the biggest in an NBA Finals game since the 24-point comeback the Celtics made against the Lakers in Game 4 of the 2008 NBA Finals.
- leading the series 2-1, Lebron and D-Wade decide to make fun of Dirk, who was sick throughout the series with flu symptoms.
Personal note
For the posters who bitch about the wall of text and won’t see this, you’re gay and this is not debatable.
Unlike my above statement, my take on this being one of best NBA playoffs in the modern NBA is debatable. I’m sure T-Bird has blocked this shite out of his memory.
It had it all though, star power everywhere, a major upset, a villain a lot of fans hated in Miami, the emergence of OKC’s stars on the big stage and the last time a team won a title without the big 3 formula.

This board was the GOAT during those NBA Finals

A NBA postseason with only one series going the distance is not the GOAT playoffs. 2016 and 1995 had better postseasons.

Those finals were awesome how Dirk went complete demigod and carried that team, and watching LeBron fold was pretty sweet too

Jason Terry can eat a fat dick.

Dirks play during the entire playoffs was probably one of the most dominant runs I've ever seen from an athlete.

This is my thought pattern. 2011 was good and had some memorable moments, but the competitive quality of series wasn't really enough for it to be the GOAT.
2016 had 5 seven game series, including the Warriors comeback in the WCF and the Cavs shocking comeback from 3-1 in the Finals. I would say that's the best in recent memory.
1987-88 was really good too. The Lakers won 3 straight 7 game series, the last vs the Bad Boy Pistons.

50 years from now Rockets fans will still be talking about beating the spurs in 1995.

Such an awesome series. Never been more happy for an athlete of a team I don’t root for than I was for Dirk. Good for him.

That's a good spinoff topic. Most dominant single player NBA playoff runs.
Without looking further (and limiting to one per player) I'd list:
Jordan in 92-93.
Hakeem in 94-95.
Shaq in 99-00.
Wade in 05-06.
Dirk in 10-11.
LeBron in 17-18 (or 15-16 if you want that ring as capper).

I wish I'd been on here then. Bet the LeFans were melting gloriously.

The Admiral won MVP because he scored like 80 points in their final regular season game to beat out Shaq for the scoring title.
Do y'all remember when Hakeem and Shaq were supposed to go 1 on 1 on PPV from the Trump Taj Mahal? I still have the cup from Taco Bell somewhere.

How people continue to forget about kobe's 2001 playoff is beyond me
Posted on 5/14/19 at 5:04 pm to McCaigBro69
Dirk had probably the greatest playoff run I’ve ever seen
Roy
Aldridge
Russ
Harden
KD
Kobe
Gasol
Wade
Bosh
Lebron
All went down to Dirk, whose second best player was either Jason Terry or Tyson Chandler.
Watching JJ Barea check Lebron fricking James in a playoff series was twilight zone level absurdity. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
The Mother’s Day Massacre of the Lakers was wild, too. We never saw a normal version of Andrew Bynum again. He body slammed Barea and walked out of NBA relevance.
The first round Brandon Roy comeback that left him in tears is still one of my favorite YouTube highlights.
Just a great year. And still relevant - Dirk has a ring, and it’s by far the biggest blemish on Lebron’s resume.

Because he wasn't even the best player on his team?

Don’t care how petty it sounds, but it was awesome to see the Heatles knocked down a peg. Dirk, Tyson, Kidd and Marion all finally got their rings. Was probably the happiest for Carlisle

Jason Terry too. I always liked him because he has a bowling alley in the basement of his Atlanta home.
