How satisfied are we supposed to be with only signing Moreland so far? Clearly our weakness is at the plate and big bats are getting signed all over. It looks like we're going to get J.D. Martinez so that helps some, but I'm still not happy with how the offseason has gone. Thoughts?

you return the core of a team that won 93 games. You have young players that will take the next step. They dont really need to do anything. Sounds like they may re-sign eduardo nunez tho

If the Red Sox don't sign JD Martinez, they are absolutely fricked. If they sign him, I'll give them a slight chance to win the AL East. Otherwise, they have no chance.

They have Betts, Benintendi, Bradley already and most likely with sign JD Martinez. The last thing they need to do is sign Braun, who is very very injury prone anyway.

The entire market is in a weird place. JD Martinez doesn't really have the market everyone thought he would, so the Sox probably put their bid in and are holding firm. JD can mash, but he cannot really function defensively, so they are probably exploring as many ways to dump Hanley as they possibly can.

If I had to guess, the Sox also believe most of their team slumped hard last year and by getting a new manager/hitting coach, they've already massively improved.

I agree with you. With most of the best prospects traded, now what? Waiting for Bradley to finally hit? Watching Bogarts regress? For Betts to turn into Ortiz? This team has made alot of mistakes recently- I am still uber-pissed about how the Travis Shaw/3b situation was managed.

I really hope Devers turns out to be the solution at 3rd. Now about catcher.....

Moncanda brought one of the best pitchers in the game to the Sox on a cost controlled contract.

Travis Shaw was a wreck the last half a season he played for the Sox, and Devers will most certainly have a far, far better career than Shaw.

We have a couple of good defensive catchers with meh hitting upside.

This team will be fine, and will compete for the AL East title.

Dombrowski, however, wasn't exactly clear when asked if the Nunez signing impacts his pursuit of other free agents.

"Other free agents, perhaps. Not all free agents, but others, sure." High-priced free agents? "I really wouldn't want to get into it," Dombrowski replied.

Dombrowski gave his typical answer when asked if he's still eager to add a big-name free agent.

"I always think our club can be better," Dombrowski said. "And we always will strive to make our club better. But if we went into the season with the club that we have now, and it was healthy, I would feel very good about that."

If Dombrowski doesn't sign JD I'm gonna be so pissed. Getting Nunez back was good, but we can't compete with the top teams without improving our offense.

At this point, I’m kind of over JD. career year last year. Has leaked that he’s unhappy with how Boston has negotiated/wants to be somewhere else. Not a recipe for success for a FA coming to the Sox.

I just think that's a Boras leak to get the Sox to pony up more cash.

^^^This, they need to dump Hanley if possible but most likely won't happen, then sign JD. I don't want us to pay a ridiculous amount of money to JD, would feel like the Price contract to me. Too many years who just turned 30 who had a stellar yr right before his contract came up. I do like the player just don't want to pay 150 million for him.

I don't like DD and his farm system ways, but getting Sale at that price was great and it seems he loves the city would possibly resign. 3rd base is the key, Devers needs to keep the weight off if he does I could see him hitting 30 homeruns in a few years.
Vasquez is great behind the plate, hits for a decent average as well. Platoon him with a veteran that position will be fine.
Bullpen is my main concern, interested to see what Thornburg and Carson Smith look like to get to Kimbrel

JD Martinez is an impressive bat, but he's basically been throwing a Boras fueled temper tantrum this entire off season. To me it also sounds like he's basically begging teams to equal Boston's offer because he would rather play elsewhere.

I think he signs with Boston. They're just playing a game of chicken to see who swerves first. They'll meet in the middle and everyone will be happy.

We currently have the best offer on the table for JD. What do you want them to do? Up their bid when no one else beat the first one?
