So I’m a GT fan. Have been all my life. But I’m at a bit of a crossroads here. I didn’t go to GT. My dad became a GT fan when he moved to Atlanta back in the 70’s and decided he didn’t like the way UGA fans barked and carried on. He was just put off by them. I think he actually didn’t mind UGA football but the fans turn him the other way.

Anyways that’s about as far as it goes for me in terms of my roots to being a GT fan. I find myself at a serious crossroads lately. I have seen GT have some fun years. But things have really changed in college football and GT has done nothing to keep up. Well that’s not all the way true. We did get new locker rooms this year and we do have a really nice indoor practice facility.

But since our 2014 season, I have seen recruiting dip to devoid levels. We have a converted RB playing QB who can’t throw (even though Paul Johnson says he can throw in practice (lie)). We have zero talented on DL or LB. we have decent DBs. Our OL can’t block a fart.

My question to the other fanbases that frequent this board is what do you see as wrong with GT?

My personal opinion is that PJs offense is killing this program. Kids don’t want to play in it offensively and kids don’t want to practice against it defensively. PJ is terrible with the media and that doesn’t help with recruiting. It seems that our yearly opponents have learned to adapt to playing against us and we no longer catch folks by surprise.

I get GT has tough academic standards but I don’t buy it. Stanford, Notre Dame etc. also have tough standards. GT is in Atlanta in a recruiting hotbed and I don’t think GT is doing itself any favors running this offense. Other GT fans that went to the school say that the academic restrictions need to be relaxed and there needs to be new major introduced that don’t require calculus and other tougher classes that other schools don’t require. But surely, there are plenty of talented kids that can handle intro to calculus. I think they want to blame anything other than Paul Johnson because they think his system fits at GT.

I think it’s bullshite and it’s killing GT. What say the rest of you?

Georgia Tech sucks and is an inferior program. If you want to be a happier person, convert to the true faith. You’re welcome and have a blessed day.

I don’t know why they keep on with the triple option crap.

No one wants to play that unless they go to the service academies and have to because of the talent level.

Eventually GT will be bad enough long enough that they'll get rid of Johnson, and you'll be freed. Just a matter of time at this point.

Will not disagree with your assessment. As someone who isn’t really connected to the school and I don’t see them investing in making football better I wonder why I even bother. Hate the be fair weather ish but I think it’s beyond that. I’ve stuck with them for several bad times. But I don’t see how they become competitive again in the current college football landscape. At least Kirby is turning out to be a pretty inspiring coach.

I’m 30, but throughout middle school I was a huge David Greene and UGA fan. Started liking Tech more though as I got older. I dodnt attend either school, so I don’t partake in the rivalry and I support UGA against everyone but Tech.

It’s time for a change at Tech, however. There’s a reason only the service academies run this offense. The system, along with the academic issues pretty much guarantee that Tech will only get 2 & 3 stars and the occasional 4 star. Coach Johnson got an extension this past summer, so I doubt any change will come soon.

The transition between Johnson and next coach will be brutal. If you think they have personnel issues now, just wait until they have these guys attempting a semi-modern passing attack with more typical pass pro and run blocking. Yikes.

Yeah...trying to hold out. But I have watched 2 games this year. Alcorn State and USF. I didn’t even bother watching Pitt and Clemson. It’s just sad really. It used to be appointment TV or game. I used to have season tickets but quit buying them after I had a kid. Hopefully will feel like buying them again when he is older and can make it through a game. But it’ll take wholesale changes and a focus on improving the product before that happens.

College football was the best to me. Meant more than the NFL bug since this recent deep decline of GT it had flipped.

Agree the transition is going to suck.

GT has an undersized OL who don’t know how to pass protect. We have zero TE’s on the roster and we don’t really have a QB on the roster who can run anything other than this offense. But at least if I can see a younger coach, an uptick in recruiting, a new message and ab offense that I don’t have to defend to every other major fanbase Ill be happier.

Remember Jim Donnan from back in the day? I still remember him on this show on ESPNU during Paul Johnson’s first year at GT saying that the triple option was gonna terrorize the ACC

Isn't this one of the reasons that GT opened their School of Business? Not that getting a BSBA is easy, it is certainly less difficult than getting an engineering degree.

The offense has to change. Was it the USF game where they had only attempted like 2 passes in one half? No way you can be successful in a P5 conference playing like that.

Georgia Tech has, largely, been a 7-8 win program over the last 20 years with the rare 10+ win season. It's very similar to Kirk Ferentz and Iowa, but Tech needs to get rid of Paul Johnson. The transition will be ugly.

Yes. They did add the business degree but from what I’m told by GT grads they still require calculus snd into science so it’s a bachelor of science rather Bachelor of Arts.

Agree 7-8 win program is about what it is. But that’s helluva lot better than 2-3 losing season and staring down 3-4. That’s just unacceptable. Throw that shitty offense on top of it and it’s even more unbearable.

I could solve the calculus issue for Georgia tech (as if they would listen) but its more important that you investigate the ideas involved in being a fan, a fanatic, identified with a sports team.

Its not about gt.

That may happen as soon as this year if the wheels really do come off.
