Murph's Dad told him, "Well, Dale, if they ever try to steal center field you got 'em."

Ben Hogan. Watching the Shell Wonderful World of Golf recently when he played Sam Snead in Houston in 1964, eleven years after his last major and he was still money from tee to green, basically calling every shot “I am going to hit this drive 254 yards about five yards from the left edge of the fairway….”. Then they cut to him putting and it was just tragic to watch. He looked like Trump putting.

Yeah when he came up as a catcher he got a bad case of the yips

Ah, that makes sense. I only think of him as an outfielder.

David Duval always fascinates me. Stood right up to peak Tiger before completely falling off a cliff and has publicly been open that the pressure is what got to him.

both the player and the poster
I went through a year where I could not throw the ball back to the pitcher. I could throw down to 2nd and 3rd without a problem. Had to totally retrain my throwing angle. I still have occasional issues when I'm throwing around with my kids.

I've been involved in the game of darts for well over 30 years and a form of the "yips" can ruin a players form.

In darts it's known as "Dartitis" when a player can't seem to release the dart to the board with any fluidity and it has wrecked several dart players careers on the pro level.

Some notables are Eric Bristow, 5 time World Champion who totally lost the ability to smoothly throw the dart to the board and probably one of the things that brought on his retirement.

Others on the pro tour are Mensur Suljovic, Justin Pipe, Mark Webster and of late, Nathan Aspinall who is currently #8 in the world but having more and more problems every tournament he plays.

Also on the ladies side, 3 time World Champion Beau Greaves has had her bouts with it over the years and she's still only 21.

In a Playboy interview, Lee Trevino said that he was on the 18th hole of a tournament along with Arnold Palmer. Said he had the yips so bad that he asked Arnold if he could putt first. Arnold said fine.

Yeah, he was a catcher at first, and got to where he allowed too many pass balls and strangely, couldnt throw back to the pitcher.

Biles - sure, she would be the modern definition of yips
Simmons tho? All he ever did was drive to the basket and distribute, then he got older and less and less and less efficient.

You see this a lot with NFL kickers too.

Justin Tucker is just a recent example who started to nosedive end of last year. Cowboys had one recently too ( Bailey I think)

Deshaun Watson for football. He was a very good qb in Houston. Hasn’t been the same since the lawsuits.

Biggest yips event I’ve ever seen is when Greg Norman totally lost it with a huge lead that Sunday at the Masters in 96.

I’ve dealt with the same thing. I could pitch, throw out runners trying to steal….but I couldn’t throw the ball back to the pitcher. Like Major League 2 bad. I couldn’t play catch. It was awful, 100% mental and hard to explain how difficult it is to fix.

Always felt bad for guys who experienced it at the professional level.

He is ambidextrous and has some mental block about shooting. Not sure if it's yips, but he can't commit his brain to a dominant hand. It's bizarre.
