How cold is that!?! You would almost have to hate someone to do that.

They were paid money by gamblers for deliberately trying to lose. Jackson pocketed $5,000 which is equal to $97,000 today.

I repeat it’s not a done deal that Rose or Jackson gets in. The Hall of Fame is not controlled by MLB. The committees who would vote on this are not beholden to the fans. They have a lot of former MLB players and a whole bunch of players including some of Pete’s teammates have said he should not be in. It’s their call, not the fans, the fans have absolutely zero voice in the process. So everyone is celebrating way too soon.

Not seeing what there is to celebrate about Rose.

What a fricking slap in the face to Pete Rose’s family that they waited until he was dead to do this.

Manfred only took up the subject because the family attorney and the estate asked him to do so in January.

I don't think it would be a slap in the face considering it was at their request.

A lot of what happened to Pete was his own doing. Giamatti didn't want to ban him, gave him several avenues to remedy things and Pete never took them. He then bashed Giamatti personally for years. The following commissioners never released Pete from the ban out of solidarity with Giamatti.

I loved watching pete rose growing up. A great player. He got the name “Charlie hustle” for a reason . He played the game the way it was supposed to be played. BUT HE broke the cardinal rule of baseball knowing the risks of
It. And when he got caught he should just fessed up to it and be done with it. But HE chose not to. That’s all on him.., this IS a slap in the face to the whole Rose family though.

I’m not celebrating. I think this is a black mark on the sport. But it’s done and I accept it so let’s move on.

100% all of this. Pete was his own worst enemy at almost every turn in this process.

From what I've heard on the radio this morning, you may have that backwards. Writers want him in, and the committee may not.

Most accounts I've heard from people meeting him in real life is he's a prick of the highest caliber. And he lied about gambling on the game for 14 years.

He broke the rules, and lied about it. Hard to get past that for baseball purists.

I don't really care if he gets in or not. But he broke the Golden Rule.

------

The one thing I can't wrap my head around is he was betting on HIS team, why the hell would he throw games or be accused of throwing games for gambling?

If he bet on his team, you'd think he'd be trying to win rather than throw.

Do I have that last part right? I heard he only bet on his team. Or did he bet against his team and throw?

I never kept up with his stuff much, as you can probably tell..

According to renowned truth teller Pete Rose, Pete Rose only ever bet on his team to win.

I don’t know that evidence has ever been found to disprove that. But it raises another question in did he bet on his team EVERY game, or were there games he didn’t bet on. From an “integrity of the sport” standpoint it would be basically the same thing.

Rose estate should decline immediately.

his estate is who filed suit to have him removed, arguing that him dying is why he should be required to be removed from the permanently banned list. Their lawsuit is precisely why all the other dead players were also removed.

I also know you only know or care about that stuff because of Eight Men Out, which proves my point.

This is such a dumb take. Yeah he played before most people on earth were alive. No shite they only personal knowledge they have of the guy is what they've seen in movies. The same could be said about Babe Ruth too. Joe Jackson was arguably the best player of his generation, regardless of whether people over a hundred years later were able to see him play to have some sort of a vested interest in his legacy

Rose and Jackson don't have any eligibility left, writers won't get to vote. It will be up to the Veterans committee, some of the ex players don't like Rose.

Don’t interrupt the parade of people venting their hatred of the press.

Pete is going to have a tough row to hoe with his peers on the Veterans Committees. It would be poetic justice and hilarious if they put Jackson in and left him out.

Yeah Johnny Bench said all the nice, proper, diplomatic things when Pete died, but they detested each other as teammates. That Reds locker room probably reeked of piss from those alpha dogs marking their territory and trying to prove who was No. 1, Pete thought it should be him because he was the local boy and Charlie Hustle, and Johnny thought it should be him because he was the GOAT at his position.

hose results show that only one demographic in this country ... one ... has a positive view of Pete. That demographic is conservative white men.

I have to imagine that any other demo's familiarity with Pete is pretty negligible to begin with
