Just saw this on the net that Whitaker was struck by a car as he was crossing a street in Virginia Beach last night around 10 p.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car has not been charged with any crime.

I still consider him the greatest defensive fighter of all time with a great counterpunch

He got robbed against CHavez and too old by De La Hoya (even though he handled himself well) and Trinidad (which was not close)

RIP.

He was one of the most underrated boxers of all time. Taking into account the competition he faced, I might put him over some bigger names like Mayweather. He was as good a defensive fighter as Floyd without the hugging.

Yes. I had him one round better than De lahoya

A really good defensive fighter. Led the way for Mayweather

The irony that he was known for being tough to hit.

That he was. He took a page from Argentine boxer Nicolino Locche and improved upon it. Check out some of his videos on u-tube. The guy was a defensive genius and slippery as a greased pig.

In 2002, The Ring ranked him tenth in their list of "The 100 Greatest Fighters of the Last 80 Years"
