Did they ever decide to let teams trade draft picks?

A college pitcher would be a no for me no matter how good Skenes is.

Well this is dumb.

Randy Johnson
Roger Clemons
Justin Verlander
Max scherzer
Gerrit Cole
Jacob Degrom
Trevor Bauer
Corbin Burnes
Shane Bieber
Jake Arrietta

Whether it’s all time greats or vast vast majority of the recent Cy Young winners and active stars college arms are solid picks as long as you back up the medicals

Skenes is as close to a sure thing major leaguer as you can get. Which in the mlb draft that’s what you need.

Smart decision.

As lined out above the pirates history shows have no idea what to do with an arm like skenes

It’s not that difficult.

The have a capped pool of money to spend.

If they save a few thousands dollars(or more) by signing the HS kid vs the LSU guys, they can use that savings to get another strong prospect (usually another HS kid) later on in the draft.

You know that Crews is a Boras guy so Pittsburgh won’t want to spend as Boras won’t take anything less than slot. This is financial nothing more or less

As a Nats fan, I want Crews. Rizzo usually buys and trades for his arms outside of Stras of course. We need a replacement for Soto to be the face of the franchise. Still hold out hope Soto will return to the Nats when they start fielding a competitive team again.

Ok? Not sure what argument you are trying to make here.

Brady Aiken had an arm issue they hid and when it was discovered the Astros did the right thing-they wanted to reduce the signing bonus, the family fought it, they didn’t fear embarrassment and it turned into Alex bregman the next year.

Aiken underwent Tommy John less than a year after playing hard ball on medicals with the Astros.

Appel was a bust. It happens. The Yankees have had some along the way. However they cut bait early enough to still get a closer who despite all of his issues was a closer on a World Series team.

pirates at #1, taking a HS kid is strictly a money move. they are cheap fricks, who suck off the luxury cash and rarely put it into the team.

they used to get multi millions from luxury tax, and give it to execs as bonuses

Click bait. But then again, nobody really wants to play in Pittsburgh.

My team is the Pirates. The owner is terrible!!!

He probably isnt stealing from the team but they're certainly making a profit each and every year.

While Skenes is admittedly a generational prospect, the more I'm watching the Skenes vs Crews/pitcher vs hitter debates, they've pointed out pitchers basically only play in approx 34 games out of 162, and added seemingly every 100 mph pitcher has suffered some sort of injury. IIRC, they said since 2020, that 203 pitchers have had some form of surgery or significant injury. Injury is almost guaranteed.

Whereas, if you take a hitter like Crews, he likely plays in 162 games, with less injury risk, and in some way, somehow gets on-base in roughly 140 of those games, always being a threat to score.

Yup. And Boras and the Pirates don’t play well together. Seems like they are set on drafting a position player at #1. I’m still think there may be some posturing going on by both the Pirates and Boras. I won’t be shocked either way. If the Pirates offer Crews $9MM or above, that will still be the highest signing bonus ever given by several $100K. I think Crews/Boras would take this unless they simply don’t want to play for the Pirates which I think is also very possible.

It’s a win/win for anyone in the top 5 right now

I’m of the opinion that skenes is one of those guys that is a verlander or cole type arm.

Pumps 100+ at pitch 100 easy.

Guys like that only come around every 5-10 years. There’s not another pitcher like him in the draft.

I think crews is great but I don’t think there’s THAT much difference between him and Langford much less being a once in 5-10 years prospect
