re: Perfect Case in this Article for Why Joe Paterno should resign/be fired

Paterno passed the buck and let the admins take care of the cover up. If he wanted Sandusky gone, Sandusky would have been out in two seconds. It's clear Paterno wanted to help out his friend and I wouldn't be surprised if he directly instructed the guys in the athletic director's office to make the story go away.

That is pretty much how I feel.

Overnight Football Camps on Penn States Campus
Yeah...Jo must Go! GoPa!
quote:
Of the child sexual assault charges against former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, the fact that stands out most is that Joe Paterno, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz were aware of incidents as early as 2002. Curley testified to the grand jury that he "advised Sandusky that he was prohibited from bringing youth onto the Penn State campus from that point forward." Seven years later, in the summer of 2009, Sandusky was still hosting overnight camps for children as young as 9 at other Penn State schools.
A reader sends us the flyer for the Sandusky Football Camp, a four-day, three-night resident clinic offered at Penn State's Behrend campus in Erie, and other stops around the state including Penn State Harrisburg.
Yeah...Jo must Go! GoPa!

I'm way behind on this story. As someone who didn't hear most of the details before I wanted to make excuses for Jo Pa because he has been a beloved figure and seems like a very nice man. I especially wondered if he was slow to respond because he just couldn't believe the story... but the allegation that his assistant coach admitted to performing oral sex on a minor blows (poor word choice?) that out of the water.
But this is horribly ugly and unfortunately for Paterno and the victims involved will leave a very nasty smear on the end of one of college football's great coaching careers

i just read the whole report. I don't think he should be fired.
Him passing the news to people above him is not turning his head. He has a football team to coach. A gameplan to write. Players to recruit. I think he did the right thing by not getting directly involved. No need to be a patriot about it when I am sure he assumed that the AD would handle it.
Though i wouldnt be surprised if he did re-sign.

There is nobody "above" Paterno at PSU.

I'm sure he would have done it the same way if it was his grandkids in the shower with Sandusky.

So PSU football is more important than the welfare of children?

Not only that, if Lester would have read the report, the GA saw this on March 1, 2002! Not exactly game planning and recruitment time!

First...I want to see a paper trail. IF no formal write up then I can not believe that JoePa went to administrators. IF there is paper work then I think that makes a little difference on how JoePa should be judged.
In PA, teacher, day care workers, etc...are mandated reporters. That means "if they suspect abuse in anyway on a minor" they are required by the state's law to report it to "childline" (The Office of Children and Youth.) I have made several "mandated reports" in PA when I lived there.
As a football coach who deals with young adults in a University setting...I would think he would fall into a mandated reporter category. So if someone comes to him and says his Defensive coordinator is blowing a 10 year old in the shower...He would (I believe) have been required by law to do more than just tell administrators.
The office of children and youth will mail you back a report to document that they went and interviewed and investigated the claim. You only have to have a suspicion of abuse to be required by law to report. The law is there specifically so cases like this DO NOT HAPPEN. Someone passing the buck when it comes to protecting children...and that is exactly what JoePa did.

Where do some of you get this shite? Do you just try to make the most broad reaches you can in hopes that others will latch on?

thats irrelevant. He is only being targeted because he is an icon and the face of that program.
what about the GA that actually say Sandusky butt fricking a kid in the shower?
had i been in Joe Pa's shoes i would have trusted the AD to do the right thing and go to the proper authorities. I am football coach, not some pedophile patriot trying to bring some perv to justice.

Joe has been quoted as saying tot he effect of "when the grad assistant coach came to me he was clearly distraught by what he had seen...but I never really got he exact details of what he witenessed in the shower...but it clearly disturbed HIM"
what a crock of shite.
If I'm a boss somewhere and a employee comes up to me shaken by some really bad thing they saw happen do you think I might DEMAND to know exactly what they saw????? Joe is a liar and a pathetic old man.

Another who's life compass is way off. I'll say it again, good thing your son or nephew wasn't a victim AFTER JoePa found out.
Wonder if you'd feel any different.
I already know the answer

So you would me more mad at Joe Pa and not the actual people that witnessed these acts first hand?
Like I said, people are putting Joe Pa on a pedestal because of who he is.

FTR, we are not talking about gambling or drugs. We are talking about an offense that is probably more severe than 1st degree murder in many peoples' eyes. You don't just forward it up the chain and expect people to handle it.

If a teacher in a school is in the same situation, she reports it to the principal. JoePa is the football coach at Penn St. He's not the University president. He reported it to the higher ups (higher ups meaning the people in the administration paid to handle this kind of shite).
It seems to me like the only thing you guys would accept is him calling a press conference to announce he was citizen arresting his defensive coordinator for raping a child, and anything less than that makes him JUST AS BAD as the guy who raped the kid.
Idiots.

I didn't note specific dates. But college football is 365/24/7 job. Especially at a huge football school like Penn State.
