Brady has played with an insanely diverse amount of talent, and it's been talked about ad nauseum that they changed their offensive and defensive game plans all the time, but no you're right it's the "system".
Belichick and others have also said multiple times that Brady beat out Drew Bledsoe (who was seen as a damn good QB) in the preseason of his 2nd year.
