Don't know if it has been mentioned, but the death penalty doesn't really "punish" the current players who have nothing to do with it because they are free to transfer anywhere in the nation and play immediately. Maybe not an ideal situation, but it's not like they'd be stuck waiting on Penn State football to come back.

the former president is still on the faculty, drawing a paycheck...

What individuals are still at that PSU that were in on the cover up?
The entire culture of the program still has the "don't give a fck" mindset. Have you read the penn st message boards?
Also, 9 times out of 10, when programs get hit with NCAA violations, the people who broke the rules are years removed from when the actual punishment is taking place.

All involved players and Tressel were essentially gone when Ohio State's sanctions came down. So should Ohio State have gotten off too?

I mean frick look at this shite
LINK
Students going out of there way to protect the man who ultimately ran the university yet allowed known pedophilia for over a decade. Probably longer and probably more than 1 rapist.

So in other words no individuals who were in on the cover up are being punished

The AD and President were still there and they shared a good bit of the responsibility.

By punishing "the program", "the institution" or "Penn State" you are punishing nobody who is guilty and only the innocent. Its cowardly, lazy and beyond idiotic.
For the dumb shits that think like this, it's going to take about 5 years and a South Park episode for them to realize the severity of what actually happened at that University.

All NCAA sanctions that directly punish the entire team are pointless but missing 1 bowl game and getting the death penalty aren't even remotely close.

They certainly do have a point. And that is to scare other programs into behaving. If the penalties never punished the entire team, and just individuals, there would be a lot less accountability. Meh, so what if we are cheating/whatever? We can get rid of the offending parties and everything will be fine.

He directly stated "individuals that were involved with the cover up." The OSU president and AD never were, according to any evidence analyzed at least.
Anyways, I wasn't trying to make this debate involve the OSU scandal, but point out the flaws in Verlander's logic.

I do agree with this, but then you must also agree that trading a bowl game ring for a tattoo and hundreds of kids being anally raped on your campus and it being covered up by your University for 14 + years while continuing to allow it to happen are both totally different too.

and neither one should be punished with a bowl ban

Because if offending institutions aren't held accountable they could cheat at will and just fire everyone involved if they ever get caught. "Well NCAA investigators, everyone involved is gone, you can't give us any penalties".
