Clemson fans have been talking about since at least 2009.

Penn State and the ACC need each other emoji_events [9]

The SEC's new TV deal has illuminated the need for the ACC to step up and enhance its football (and overall) configuration. The Big Ten's refusal to even explore expansion is an opportunity for the ACC to guage Penn State's interests down the road.

I read a recent article outlining the SEC's new TV deal and the unprecedented amount of FB coverage the league will receive as a result. Take a peek for yourself in case you missed it. After reading it, I started a thread on North Carolina's most active football message -- The Tar Pit -- and inspired some very heathly debate regarding the ACC expansion, and the Penn State debate that has dominated the interwebs for most of the last month. ...

Bleacher Report has talked about PSU to the ACC since 2011

Dear ACC Commisioner Swofford: Expand with Penn State and West Virginia
Glenn PettySeptember 21, 2011

Dear Commissioner Swofford:

We write today to retract what we said yesterday. (Sorry.)

Yesterday, we advocated that Notre Dame and West Virginia join the ACC. We were wrong. (Sorry, again.)

Upon further review, and yes, the voices in our heads are on a continuous annoying loop, we have decided that the most logical newbies would be West Virginia and Penn State.

Now, you and the university presidents may be coveting UConn and Rutgers due to your fascination with the Northeast television audience, but take a moment to consider our proposal.

We understand that you are afflicted with an intense focus on the Northeast simply because you correctly believe that the millions of people who live between Piscataway, NJ and Storrs, CT will increase A(ME)CC (Atlantic [Mountain and East] Coast Conference) viewership and give the league even more leverage for the next time you visit the ESPN/FoxSports/CBS ATM cash machine otherwise known as the league’s television contract. ...

Uh, because of eyeballs...equals TV revenue, subscriptions and bargaining power.

Penn State has the largest alumni in the nation.

You don't replace them with Mizzou.

I didn't believe you, but it's true (per Cheat Sheet.com) Peen State has the most living alumni.

Not even in the top 50 for on College Cconsensus.com's 50 Most Supportive Alumni Networks

quote:

Very few students really take the alumni association into account when they’re researching where they want to go to college. Why should you bother? Isn’t the alumni association just a stuck-up old boys’ club? It’s such a long way into the future, and how does it really impact you anyway? How can alumni help students when they’re just trying to get into college? Well, the alumni association might have some old boys in it, but it will also have some of the most important people in your college career, if you’re looking at one of the colleges and universities with the best alumni networks.

quote:

What Makes a Great Alumni Association

Researching the alumni association of your top choice colleges should be part of any prospective student’s college search. Why? For one thing, alumni are often heavily involved in recruitment – you may even have an alumnus interviewing you when you apply. Once you’re in, the alumni are a major force in sponsoring scholarships, and they’re often the ones deciding who gets paid and who doesn’t. At the other end of the college journey, alumni are key to conquering the job market; high-powered alumni offer internships, put in a good word with their colleagues, write recommendation letters, and do everything they can to grease the wheels for their fellow alums.

And, of course, it’s worth researching the alumni association because if all goes well you’ll be one of them in the future. You’ll be the one sending annoying letter asking for donations out to other alumni. You’ll be responsible for passing on the good vibes, writing the recommendations, offering up a spot for interns at your company. If you make the right choice and make good on your opportunity, you’ll be able to carry on the tradition that makes the best alumni networks a crucial part of college life.
Ranking the Best Alumni Networks

It’s hard to judge what makes a great college alumni association, but College Consensus is all about doing the hard work so you don’t have to. To rank the best alumni networks, we had to start somewhere. Our initial list was drawn from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Awards, which recognizes a part of colleges and universities that doesn’t generally get the attention they deserve – the staff.

The CASE awards provide a baseline for colleges and universities that are doing great things with their alumni associations, but Consensus is concerned with getting the whole picture. That’s why the institutions in the Best Alumni ranking are placed in order of their Consensus Score, which brings together published reviews from experts and real student reviews.

Apologies for the wall of text. That explains how they ranked the schools.

This is just such a monumentally stupid thing I can't get over it. How do people in 2021 still not understand this stuff

There are things called media rights. NBC and ND have an agreement through 2025 and Penn state is held by the GOR in the B1G

They aren't moving. This is so dumb

Norman is a 190 miles from Dallas. The Dallas market also has Texas, and aTm to compete against, OU is not the top team in the Dallas market. Any BIG TV rights in Dallas would be 3rd fiddle to SEC and the Big 12.

PSU is:
158 miles to Pittsburgh, dominates the market for CFB. Pitt is irrelevant outside of Allegheny county, BIG owns this market
192 miles to Philly, BIG owns this market
165 miles to Baltimore, BIG is number 1, but has some competition from ACC
205 miles to DC, same as Baltimore
236 miles to NYC, BIG is number 1 or 2 a pretty fractured market. ND is 1 or 2 with the BIG in this market.

If PSU and ND go ACC, ACC would own these markets from a TV rights point of view. The BIG adding MD and Rutgers were pure loss leader moves to keep the ACC geographically fractured from a TV market standpoint. From a competitive standpoint, even worse because NJ, MD, and PA have been good recruiting grounds for all BIG schools since PSU joined. Wisconsin always seems to have a great RB from NJ on their roster.

Currently, Big10 still has highest per school TV payout of all conferences. Last time I checked, Big10 was ~$55mil per school, SEC ~$45mil, ACC ~$30mil

This is why it won't happen. They'd be fricking stupid to do so.

Link? I don't believe this. I'd bet money OSU has way more alumni than PSU.

ETA: I found a link that makes that claim. I = surprised.

Wasn't keeping PSU from jumping to the ACC the reason the BIG10 added Maryland and Rutgers back in the day?
