are these the same trustees that had no issue fire him immediately?

That was my first reaction when I saw that quote.

When the scandal first hit the national news, they threw him under the bus instead of waiting for the facts. Now that a full investigation has been done, and he looks far worse than he did last fall, they want to wait and see if they should remove the statue??

Joe Paterno, even in death, has to live with the consequences of his actions or, in this case, omissions.

The BOT member who said he hopes it stays up till everyone forgets bout it is exactly what will happen in my opinion. The media will stay on this till the criminal trials are over with, as they will be open to the public. But the civil suits'settlements will be sealed at both party's request & the media will lose interest fast once the news drys up. And once the media goes away, life in Happy Valley will go on as before. If their fans want to see the statue & feel proud, that is their prerogative. To everyone else in sports, it will be a statue of shame & disgust, which is what Bobby Bowden is saying.

when the statue starts to affect recruiting is when it will come down...

another scenario is when the level of national disgust finally gets through some heads there...

The school knows that it needs to come down. They are trying to consider how to do it that limits the chaos that happened when idiots protested his firing.

Related, but Tom, is Penn State expecting drastically reduced numbers of incoming freshmen this year?

I have no idea but those numbers are reported yearly I think so they will be available at some point. Academically PSU us highly ranked, especially within the state school rankings. It's why I keep trying to separate the two. The administration screwed up bad as well, but they are all gone too. The new administration needs to start distancing itself from Paterno. The statue is a start.

It should be easier now than it was then. When JoePa was fired, there was still plausible deniability. Now JoePa looks more complicit than even his doubters suspected.

This raises another question: How much did the BOT know last November? Based on public information, you could have argued that JoePa went to the guy who oversees campus police, passed on some hearsay, and figured everything was OK when he didn't hear anything. Not that he did everything he could have and should have, but enough that they should have waited until all the facts came out.

Unless, of course, they knew what facts were going to come out...

By keeping it up will make it drag out and hurt them loñgterm. Goes to show u how much in bed/brainwashed they were by Jopa. Theyre still denying, being standoffish.

I have no idea but they were the one that requested Judge Freeh to investigate this for an unbiased, comprehensive report. Then they received the report and made it publicly available. That says to me that they are serious about this and that the new administration is trying to ensure this never happens again.

Dunno if it was brainwashed. I just think they desperately want Joepa to be innocent. They can deal with Sandusky being a pedo, but Joepa is the most recognizable symbol of the university and the only successful coach they've ever had in a major sport. And the public facade was traditionally a source of pride. Penn State wasn't an Oklahoma or Miami. They won the right way. NO showboating. Run-ins with the law were taken seriously. It's hard for them to accept the idea that the rogue programs were more honorable.

This isn't a bad way of putting it. The fans people are calling delusional still can't wrap their minds around it. It's not an uncommon phenomena in any way.

Just a quick snippet from an email I received at my alumni email from the university president:

"As we move forward, there are many decisions that must be made —decisions that are not without consequences and must not be done without careful thought. Many of these decisions involve individuals and practices deeply woven into the fabric of our community.

All of this will take time."

This to me means that the statue, along with many other references to JoePa will start to come down. They will move slowly to try and avoid the chaos that came after his firing. Take it fwiw.

i think more stuff is going to come out about how joepa was the authority on campus and other than making his players go to class, he ran all over the administration....

Yeah that section of the email really made me think there is possibly more information coming out soon and the university is beginning to prepare. JoePa will slowly and methodically be removed from PSU.

While there were many PSU fans calling for the statue to remain, I saw a few threaten just this. The divide I'm seeing right keeps increasing with each news report. It's sad and pretty defeating.

Is the statue going to have security. If not I would think the obvious issue would be the statue being vandalized.

This was another discussed today on a different forum I was reading. If not, opposing fans will destroy it. Read the snippet from my email. To me it indicates it's being discussed. I think it's going to happen soon before students return for the fall. Just my opinion.
