Still, if the ratings for the 2021 season are any indication, Silver’s realizations may have come too late.

These sports leagues don’t understand how normal business works. When you piss off a customer they don’t come back, they shop somewhere else.

A whole lot of free ads are about to crush the networks. You cant guarantee your advertisers an audience that will never materialize. So when those eyes dont show up, you have to keep letting those ads run free, until you 'make good' on your original contract

That’s a terrible attempt at a deflection after your “boycotting = cancel culture” take has been annihilated by several people in this thread.

The NBA has worsened for me in almost every aspect:

League parity: worse because of super teams and upcoming FA constantly whining about their current city. SA forged a dynasty that we may never see again. No way will small markets like NOLA, OKC, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Cleveland, etc compete for FA without extreme luck.

TV deals: as has been discussed, it’s currently shite

Social aspect: it’s jumped the shark for sure

Announcers: There’s some talent out there, but as long as Mark Jones is calling a game, I’ll try to find it on another channel

Gameplay: there’s no balance. It’s basically a three-point contest every night. That’s not entertaining.

Coaching: I feel like it’s less of a factor in games than ever. If you like Xs and Os, may as well watch college.

Fan experience: like many sports, it’s getting to be impossible to go to a game and grab a beer for a reasonable price

Superstars: extremely unlikeable. Lebron hates white people. Durant complains on twitter 24-7. Kyrie is absolutely crazy. And many others have to form super teams as soon as the going gets tough.

I regret that I stopped watching when Super Teams became the standard, so I didn't get to stop watching because of the China bullshite. To address some common come-backs:

1. "NBA is the most active on social media" - still waiting for someone to tell me how this drives NBA revenue. 10 million Twitter followers give LeBron leverage to sell shite but it doesn't make the NBA a dime if they don't watch games, don't attend games, and don't buy NBA merch.

2. "Local TV rights suck and lead to spotty coverage" - no one wants to watch their local team. The League and its broadcast partners have spent 40 years building the product around 4-6 players at a time that all play for one of 5-6 major franchises.

3. "There's never been parity in the League, even at its most popular" - exactly why it has historically been 3rd or worse in the pecking order of American sports

NBA is its own worst enemy and the media doesn’t help. If they had it their way, Ja and Zion would bolt for New York now. It’s so strange that you never really see that in the NFL. Maybe a little in the MLB but not nearly to the extent of the NBA.

Hopefully guys like Giannis and Zion will start a different trend. If Giannis can win a championship with the Bucks then other guys will think they can do that too. They don’t think they can win without going to Boston, LA or NY.

You also have to think MLB has tons of young superstars to market. Tatis, Acuna, Juan Soto, May, Torres, Bellinger, Vlad Jr and Bo Bichette and that’s not to mention the “older stars” like Trout, Harper, etc will be around for a while. The NBA had that moment with Westbrook, Curry, Durant, Harden, LeBron, D-Wade and Melo. Most of those are fading fast or have teamed up. Meanwhile the only young stars of note are Zion, Luka, Ja, Giannis and maybe Trae or Jamal Murray. None of them in large markets outside of the Mavs. It’s the NBA’s worst nightmare.

It AMAZES me how nobody ever mentions Collin Sexton for the Cavs, BUT i suppose that makes your point? Nobody will ever notice him in Cleveland because the media. He is a legit stud and if he were on any other team, would be an All Star. He will probably leave Cleveland for NY as well.

Yep, I started to slowly realize that the Grizzlies and/or the Hornets will never have a chance to compete for a title. There's no point in rooting for a small market team.

I actually highly enjoyed watching the late 2000's-early 2010's Grizzlies, with their grit/grind style of hard-nose defense and post play. That style of game is long gone.

Yep, the prices at Hawks games are absolutely outrageous. $16 for a beer for example. You'd think they'd want to put more asses in seats.

Only likeable superstars are Luka and Steph... elaborating further might get me banned.

I have zero interest in wanting to watch the nba. They have made the biggest fans just not care anymore. They are the only ones to blame for this. You hate to see it.

tv ratings are such a boomer way to determine interest

I can watch an entire game, essentially, on youtube in under 10 minutes.. why would I waste my time watching some network broadcast?

What kind of beer are you buying for $16? I went like two weeks ago and they were $5.
