Very risky for GB.

It isn't risky at all. It's guaranteed compensation. Worst case scenario... the take a bit less than hoped.

I'm thinking of things in terms of "What if teams drag their feet on signing him?"

They can't make any signings, save rookies, until Flynn is moved if he gets franchised and signs that tender.

There isn't no dragging of feet, long term deal has to get done for deal to go through and its not a wait around for a couple months type of thing, more like you got 36 hours bitches or he goes to Washington.

youre assuming Flynn suddenly feels the compassion to sign a long term deal with whomever offers the Pack the best deal.

If the Pack tag Flynn and the Skins come at the Pack with the 6th overall pick, what's to stop flynn from saying "nope I wanted to go to Miami, not signing that deal"

I'm sure the Packers will get feedback from Flynn on his acceptable destinations. You guys are trying to dig to deep into something fairly common.

He'll get $14 or so million next year with practically no risk of injury and then come out next year with pretty much the same situation he has this year.

a long term deal probably means a pay cut in year 1.

players getting the franchise tag, having their destinations limited, then traded and being happy about it is not a fairly common thing.

ETA I can only think of twice this has happened recently

The franchise tag would be applied but Flynn would not sign it and then a trade would be worked out with a long term contract. Thus not paying him 14 mil.

Why would Flynn not sign it? It would guarantee him the largest paycheck of his career? It would be a guaranteed $14 or so million for 1 season.

Signing it would also put pressure on the Packers to not be to stubborn on the compensation they want from whatever team Flynn agrees to a long term deal with, unless they want to get stuck with paying Flynn $14 million.

A long term deal would mean a signing bonus AND a 2012 salary. The guarantee would exceed $14M.

Flynn does not want to be franchised any more than any other player does.

He wouldn't sign because he will get a long term contract(5yrs 50 mil) rather than a one yr 14 million. 50mil>14 mil

No he doesn't but with the Packets cap situation signing the tag gives him more leverage in getting the trade/longterm deal done than not signing it.

If he doesn't sign it, they negotiate with random teams, decide its not worth it, the pack could then withdraw the tag by a certain date. Some teams may have moved on by then taking teams out of a prospective bidding war for his services.

You don't get it. His agent will be negotiating with the teams and they will know what the Pack wants before an offer is made.

He could sign the tag offer with the packers and still get his long-term deal.

I get that but that is not the way they play this game. My brother is a small time agent and I asked him this question and am relaying what he text back.

Signing bonus is guaranteed and would be in the neighborhood of 20 mil.

Matt Flynn getting a 20 million dollar signing bonus?

There must be some stupid teams out there. I like Matt and all, and he has shown spurts, but nothing that can definitively say he's not a flash in the pan.
