Would Rice necessarily be a better fit for the SEC than Tulane in a 16 team setup? Not flaming or anything, just asking.

If you're going founding member, I think GT has the best shot (sorry Sewanee)

Rice has better academic standing and is located in a larger (and largely untapped by the SEC) market, Tulane is an original member of the SEC and has good academic standing with a larger student body.
Rice is expanding its enrollment,,,

the Houston market is what makes RICE the superior choice,,, that and athletically at least we have the last 10 years of baseball which is more than Tulane can currently offer

plus we already have the on campus facilities

I doubt Texas wants to go anywhere where they have to give up revenue to smaller schools
Exactly. but A&M might. Texas can't talk about academics all the want, but really, what they want is a conference that funnels money to them. A&M is far more concerned with "cultural fit" because the money is the same regardless.

I think the article said A&M athletics is 16 mil in debt? SEC is a better fit for them for a number of reasons, plus the money would increase by a large margin IMO with a switch for Big12 to SEC

I think A&M is sick of making money for Texas. Texas is the cash cow of the big 12, but that conference is absurd, the way it just sends all the money to Texas. It's bound to create resentment. Texas has to play someone.

agreed, however from what ive been told by my fellow UT friends is they dont want to be in the SEC due to the academics. they feel they are above you guys

I hear this from time to time, yet they are in a conference with K State, Iowa State, OK State and TX Tech?

That is just a whole lot of crazy right there......

Look, you guys are operating under the false impression that A&M could deliver the major Texas media markets to the SEC. Wrong. Hell......Texas A&M vs Texas Tech is a HUGE rivalry (with lots of hatred and a history of violence) between two large in-state public universities and that game hasn't even been televised in Texas about half the time this past decade.

Of course they are making money for Texas. The revenues are unequally distributed in UT's favor. Which is fine, but there are two teams playing. Good luck getting ratings for a scrimmage. I think Big 12 school are rightly sick of being the New Jersey Generals to UT's Harlem Globetrotters. The bigger schools want a larger piece of pie.

A&M would deliver the the Texas market for the SEC if the game was A&M-LSU. The problem ain't A&M, it's Tech, who can't deliver squat.

what's shocking to me is how much revenue A&M presently generates considering how god awful in general they have been over the last ten years

It's shocking to see how many times they have been pounded in some games in each of the last 7 or so years going back to the 77-0 loss to Oklahoma.

Would be really fun. Just think, if Texas didn't come to the SEC maybe LSU would be maroon out

They got the triple whammy from Franchione. First they hire him for a big price from Alabama. Then he wins 9 games or so in year two (2004), he gets a raise and extension and then they get killed by Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl days later. Then he wins 9 or so games in 2006, gets an extension and then they get killed in the Holiday Bowl. He then gets canned a year later for a mediocre season. Probably got a big chunk of change in the buy out as well.

They have huge alumni/fan base all over the state. Take off the orange glasses, as much as you'd like it, the Aggies won't always be as bad as they have been they last few years.

That's because the Big 12 TV deals blow, not because of lack of interest. Last year the sports bar I frequent could not get Texas-Wyoming, but could and did play ever LSU game including Tulane and La Tech.
