Its a private entity who doesn't agree with the comments of one of its employees who is a HUGE public figure for them. Also the comments offend a very large % of your fan base. 5 games is nothing considering that sort of thing could get you fired at some companies.

If he was suspended by the owners the suspension makes total sense. It is a business decision. Would your boss take kindly to you publicly offending a large portion of your customers?

, someone should be allowed to make stupid comments in this country.

they can, and then the employer of that person can punish them how they see fit. Just because you live in a free country doesn't mean what you say doesn't have consequences.

People already outside Marlin Park protesting. Will this really hurt attendance?

You do have free speech. Doesn't mean the rest of the pansies will agree with you, and you have to be willing to take what comes with making stupid, insensitive remarks.

Spot-on. This monster has been committing atrocities & torturing the people of Cuba for over 50 years. He is viewed by so many Cubans as basically the equivalent of Hitler & to say a single good word about him is treated as a slap in the face of every single person whom died at his regime's hand or in the Atlantic just trying to escape their horror.

Yes, it is a big deal.

My guess those people have nothing better to do and are out there to show people "Hey! look at me! I feel sorry for you! I have a heart!"

I thought his comments were pretty clearly a joke.

He's pretty upset about it, judging by his press conference.

He apologizes to everyone in the Latin World and then says..."and if I have left anyone out, I'm sorry."

Unintentional comedy to mock the comedy of PC.

And then later...again

"I'm here on my knees, apologizing to everyone in the Latin community."

It seriously feels like he's mocking the overreaction or our PC world.

Like I posted in another thread on this topic:

quote:

And the Miami ownership didn't know what Ozzie was when they signed him?

He's originally from Venezuela. He's on record as being a fan of Hugo Chavez. Chavez and Castro are BFF's. Connect the dots.

They're doing damage control big time, but again maybe a little checking before they hired him (it's not like Ozzie is shy when it comes to speaking his mind) would have saved a lot of grief later.

If the miami marlins coach professed love for a dude responsible for murdering your family member(s), you would be pissed.

+1.. you should have saved this for 6000 (5999 as far as I can tell)

If it's management, they're still overreacting but well within their rights.. if it's the MLB frick that.

MLB is a private entity, and Guillen pissed off a large part of it's fan base.

Freedom of speech applies to government institutions; Guillen's not going to be jailed for his comments.

This is a business move by MLB. Pure and simple.

Yes they warrant suspension from the Marlins

Many people in their fanbase literally risked their lives to get away from Castro's regime

Now your new manager says he likes the guy? If you want to have any chance of keeping people coming to games you need to show that you're not ok w Ozzie's comments and I think five games is appropriate...not too long, not too short

If Ozzie says what he said while working for any private business in Miami, he's terminated on the spot and has to fight for unemployment compensation. He's lucky to get only a suspension.

It's strange how the Miami Marlins are a private entity and can do that.

I agree. And this is not over yet. If this doesn't blow over soon and quickly, his job still might be at risk. Cuban-Americans do not play around when it comes to pro-castro sentiment.

ETA: the new ballpark is located in Little Havana.
