Just sad. And what an awful way to start your first season coaching at a school too.

Damn. He was committed to Ole Miss for a while before going to JUCO route. Very sad to hear

Until they start mandating all ncaa athletes get tested for in larged heart these kind of things will happen. They haven't announced what it was, but I'm sure that's what it was. Seems we have something like this happen at least once a year. You can live many days, athletic competitions with an enlarged heart, then one day it has to much.

RIP. This is the guy who called out John wall a few years back when he was in HS.

Wish somehow they were mandated. I think it's called an echocardiogram or something.

Yes, I walked in the baseball team in college and the physical needed to play college sports is beyond pathetic.

Thats tragic. Any idea ot the cause yet?
I am really hoping those aren't his kids.

The issue is that it's actually pretty uncommon. Yes, we see it pop up in the news more often but when you compare it statistically to the number of kids/young adults that compete in a sport across the country it's a very, very small fraction.
That said, the NCAA and the American Heart Association are working on some better guidelines to evaluate cardiac health in athletes. A lot of your bigger programs already monitor this through technology in practice (i.e. UK Basketball uses heart monitors and the like to evaluate how the heart functions during HIT exercise).
From the article:
quote:
The NCAA is moving forward with developing guidelines to detect college athletes at risk for sudden cardiac death — an issue that recently riled university team physicians and is seeping into state legislatures, where lawmakers are pushing for mandated heart screenings for high school athletes.
But what will be missing from the NCAA guidelines — expected in 2016 — is a recommendation to automatically screen all college athletes with an electrocardiogram, a test that measures the heart’s electrical activity to check for a number of heart problems. Testing entire teams would pose a logistical and financial challenge for some universities. In addition, ECGs do not find every significant heart problem and can sometimes look abnormal in people with normal hearts.
“At this point in time, it doesn’t make sense for us to recommend ECG screening,” said Brian Hainline, M.D., the NCAA’s chief medical officer.
Hainline backed off an idea to recommend ECG screening for all athletes in sports such as basketball after a Wall Street Journal article in March prompted about 100 team doctors from NCAA schools to sign a petition opposing the plan. Currently, ECG screening is required for many professional athletes, but not for those in high school or college

Cost of an echocardiogram runs between $1,000 and $2,000.

Nah, if you have team doctors and economies of scale, the "market rate" is irrelevant. I had a stress test for precautionary measures with an out of pocket cost of $25 a few years ago.

Also, assuming a max of 8 new players per year, a team could afford $16,000 per year using the $2000 estimate.

The majority of the Power 5 teams could afford it, but the smaller programs are already working on a negative budget.

This. It's a really simple fricking echocardiogram. Basically an ultrasound of the heart. would've caught this and several others. The only exceptions that wouldn't be caught would be those who abuse cocaine (rarely) and those who have a very rare electrical condition (Brugada syndrome, also rare).
