Their D still gave up 500+ yards yesterday. They seem extremely opportunistic, and stiffen better inside the red zone than teams from the past

Aren't they ranked 3rd?
So the biggest difference is the playoff system this year. Under the BCS system, they'd be playing OSU in the Rose (not for a national title).
The title game would've been FSU and Bama.

I want to see how they do if Ohio State is within a touchdown in the 4th quarter.
My biggest criticism of teams like Oregon is that they have no clue how to close in a big game. They only know one speed on offense and they don't know how to slow down and run clock in close games against elite teams because they don't have the personnel and mentality to do it.
Like yesterday's Cotton Bowl (yes I know what Oregon did to Michigan State). Or TCU/Baylor.

We conceded yards against FSU. We gave up 25 yards in the first half to AZ.

I think the biggest difference is their interior run game. They've got some big backs to complement their usual speedy guys.
The O and D Lines are a lot more stout than a few years back as well

Offensive line is healthy for the first time this year. Differences from past seasons come down to one thing, the QB. He's perfect for the offense they want to run and he can run it damn near flawlessly. Their defense isn't much different than past seasons....."Bend but don't break" and force a lot of turnovers.
The main difference is the QB. He's gotten better every year and since the offensive line is back and healthy, they are clicking.
He looked nervous to start yesterday, but settled down in the second qtr.

Nothing against Darron Thomas or Dennis Dixon, but Mariota is a cut above.
huge difference between dixon and thomas. dixon was almost as good as mariota, and was on his way to a heisman trophy(and ducks to a national title game) but he tore his acl against arizona. if dixon was the qb of that 2010 oregon team they beat auburn as well. the other qb you are thinking of is masoli, who wasn't as good as dixon, but probably better than thomas. 2010 oregon was their best team, just happened to have their worst qb.
regarding the running backs and inside running game, i think lamichael james was built similar to the guys they have now, and probably better. difference is that james was the only inside running threat, barner and DAT were much better running wide. now oregon has a couple of guys that are big enough to pound it up the middle. Honestly, I think they have had better wr's and skill players in general in previous seasons, it's just that the wideouts are better utilized with Mariota as qb than Thomas.
oregon is still the same team they have been the past 5 seasons or so, this is mariota's 3rd year as a starter and he has been balling since day 1, its not like he has come out of nowhere this season. as i said before, the stars really aligned for them with stanford sucking and nobody else challenging them in the pac12, as well as facing an FSU team that was nowhere near as good as the teams that beat them in the past(2010 auburn, 2011 lsu)

I see what you're saying but I wont forget thr frustrations of 2002 with Jason Fife, before Kellen Clemens replaced him and then Gary Crowton basically quit on Dennis Dixon in 2006 (think Brady Leaf). Dixon wasnt great until his senior 2007 season, Chip's first season as our OC.
Our run defense was pretty poor early on this season. The Arizona game stands out. But they have since cleaned their issues up and are back to attacking and not missing tackles. I think a lot of it may have been adjusting to Pellum as our new DC.

Oregon is way deeper than in the past. 30 fewer California recruits going to USC has also helped spread the talent level out around the West Coast.

They actually play competent defense. Unlike last years where they were all offense and tried to outscore you.

Nick Foles became a Pro Bowl NFL quarterback in this offense. Anybody can look good in this offense.
Like I said, you just have to see what happens in a close game where the defense is tired from being on the field for 40 minutes thanks to Oregon's 58 second drives.

I think you hit it. There aren't any elite teams this year. It's been a down/rebuilding year for basically most traditional powerhouses - Bama, LSU, Florida, USC, Stanford(from at least the last half decade), etc. There's not that one dominant team because most of them are young/inexperienced and Oregon is finally taking advantage of that. I don't think this 2014 Oregon team beats 2013 FSU, 2012 Bama, 2011 Bama or 2011 LSU so on and so on.
