Let's say there's a kicker that is like Jesus at kicking onside kicks but isn't worth a frick kicking off or field goals. Would you value his skills enough to warrant a roster spot?

Keep in mind we already carry guys like Long Snappers that get a roster spot!

if he was like 90% at onside kicking, I'd sign him and onside kick it every time

No, because sometimes the kick is perfect but the coverage team is just not able to recover it.

Wouldn't offer a scholly, but preferred walk-on. I would offer a scholly if you meant he was absolutely ridiculous and successful literally 75% of the time, and then I'd onside kick all the time, not just when losing. But if you just mean he's great, but "human" (i.e. a 35% success rate), then no, I wouldn't offer a scholly.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the NFL buddy with the limited roster and active roster.

Sure. Getting the ball at a 40% clip is well worth a special teamer slot for me.

then I would onside kick every time. So yeah. You're essentially trading opp field position for more possessions.

NFL - no
CFB - no scholarship, but would allow him to walk-on

Can my other kicker handle KO and FG's? Can he punt also?
