I didn't know this was around in the early 90s much less mid to late 80's. Fun read from 33 years ago

Who will be MVP?

quote:

Player PPG RPG APG Stl FG% FT% Team W-L%
Dominique Wilkins 28.4 7.8 2.6 89 .475 .797 .577
Larry Bird 24.6 9.8 6.2 111 .464 .908 .820
Alex English 29.1 5.0 4.1 45 .506 .848 .574
Akeem Olajuwon 23.6 11.2 2.0 91 .516 .663 .654
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar 23.5 5.8 3.6 36 .569 .790 .750
Moses Malone 23.0 11.8 1.2 45 .445 .777 .642
Adrian Dantley 29.0 5.3 3.3 45 .559 .814 .473

quote:

This is a tough call. I think I can narrow it down further to Wilkins, Bird, and Olajuwon. From there it gets tougher. I might be tempted to go with Bird were it not for my innate dislike for the Celtics and the fact that he won it the last two years. He said he thought Michael Jordan deserved it last year. I disagree, but I think Bernard King deserved it the year before.

I thought it said 1996 at first and I was excited to see some talk about the Parkview Baptist Phi Slama Jama days.

Bill James would be the most apt comparison I would think.

I was reading this thread on reddit earlier. It’s so weird seeing posts critiquing players of that era in real time

A post from 5/20/1985. Imagine how mad this guy gets when he watches the NBA now

The point is that basketball is not the prissy, sissy game that many of you fans (Lakers) would like to see. If I want to watch players hit outside shots all day I could go down to my old high school and watch the girls team play.

Well , Georgia Tech choked again! For the umpteenth time this year "Cremins Cretins" have blown it. Over rated and overmatched, they were no match for the LSU Tigers. Before the tournament even began the concensus was that Tech would choke before the final eight. I was surprised that they even got that far. But now for the rest of the tournament. I fully expect Kansas and Duke to join LSU and Louisville in the Final Four. Even though LSU is riding an emotional high, count on the Cardinals to win. In the other semi-final, which should be the best game of the tournament, look for Kansas to win in at least one overtime period, with a Danny Manning fade-away twine teaser to clinch the game. In the final, Denny Crum's surprise team will have it's hands full with Kansas, and I fully expect the Jayhawks to emerge with the National Championhip. With the conclusion of the season we can all look forward to next year. Teams to watch in the '86-'87 season are Kansas, Louisville, Kentucky, N.C.State, Pepperdine, Illinois and my personal underdog, the University of Waterloo Warriors, who hail from the town where Naismith invented the game.

What's funny is that this almost literally when the game was changing. In the early 80s, teams still employed enforcers like in hockey and fighting was still common, maybe even tacitly encouraged. By 1986, it was like that stuff never happened. The change in the NBA was sudden and dramatic... only to have another sea change in recent years.

I think the Bird/Magic/Jordan epoch ended with the beginning of Splash City, as the NBA entered the Analytics Era full bore. Teams were still largely built and played the same in 2012 and 1984. Now, that's not close to true. Look at the explosion in three-point attempts and the sudden drop in rebounding.

A post about Jordan from 1/30/85

quote:

Marc Lee

Since San Diego basketball fans are now in the dark with respect to
goings-on in the NBA, could someone please tell me how in the world
Jordan is piling up such outrageous stats? All I've seen is box
scores and the occaisional slam-dunk highlight on ESPN, but I don't
even know, for instance, if he's playing point guard, shooting guard,
mostly around the basket, scoring on outside jumpers, or what. From
the few highlights I've seen, it seems he has carte blanche to go
wherever on the court he feels. But what's he got that makes him
special? I don't remember him having a particularly good outside
shot at UNC, and there are plenty of 6'6" players who can jump in
the NBA.

Whatever you feel Danny's basketball attributes are....
Let us not forget that he is the League's MVW -- MOST VALUABLE WHINER!!!

Oh yeah, remember when good 'ol Danny Boy led the league in most OFFENSIVE BITES IN A SEASON.

Yes indeed, Danny Ainge is a true MODEL player which ALL youngsters should
look up to with the highest respect.

MJ was once thought of as a talented flier that could never win a title

Then he won titles and people evolved their opinions

We call those people rational thinkers

Lebron was once thought of as a phenomenally gifted athlete that could never win a title

Then he won titles and people dug in deeper with insane opinions

We call those people MSB posters

It’s funny that the usernames are mostly people’s real first and last name. Unthinkable today.
