And what is the spin on not turning around to check on the linesman after knocking him down? If it's accidental wouldn't you check to make sure the person you run over is alright? He just goes right to the bench and doesn't even acknowledge what just happened

I don't know. I think one would be that as far as he can tell, play is still going on. If he stops and his replacement is already coming on you have too many guys on the ice. Or the fact that he looks pretty damn confused as he's sitting on the bench there. This one in particular is a tough spot though since he didn't go through concussion protocol and played the rest of the game. If he cops to having concussion-like symptoms then that opens up a whole different set of issues for the team.

His head is up the whole time and then he accelerates and extends his arms through the hit. Anyone calling this an accident is absurd

I think criminal charges for battery should be instituted against the player. It's easily arguable that he's got the appropriate actus rea and mens rea.

really?

I mean I kinda agree. Why are athletes allowed to commit crimes in their jobs? If I get mad at my boss and punch him I'm getting arrested. An athlete can punch another player and nothing happens. And punching a player is not a part of football, baseball etc etc

Well, some would argue that punching IS a part of hockey

I agree, but it may create a slippery slope that pro sports aren't willing to deal with. I think they'd like to handle these thing internally

Should be a minimum 1 year suspension and loss of pay.

The NHL has suspended him pending a hearing next week.

I was kind of surprised that Melrose defended him this AM and didn't think he would be suspended.

There's a second camera angle that gives SOME credence to what Wideman was saying. It kind of looks from the second angle that he wasn't looking straight up and threw his hands up at the last second.

Again, it isn't conclusive, and I still think he gets a 10 game ban.

I tend to agree. Of course this is the NHL, so logic may not apply.

10 game is the minimum, not 20. Though I think he'll get 20. Probably the only mitigating factor in Wideman's defense is that he looks like suffered a concussion himself, but that's still no excuse to cross check a ref. I'd be fine with him getting suspended for the rest of the season.

This was a bad hit, and a despicable act. Refs are off limits.

It's quite humorous how everyone in here and on the internet can read minds and knows what is going on with Wideman. He clearly got drilled and looked up like he didn't know where he was. He should not be suspended for "life" or even for a year. Minimum suspension if that. Unless you were there and saw his eyes clearly focused on the ref, then your opinion is invalid. The fricking media aids in the pussification of America

It's quite humorous how you think you know more on the situation than everyone else

It looked like the ref was skating to him and wideman was trying to prevent from in to him. It was incidental IMO. The ref needs to watch where he's going

I really don't believe this was intentional, but believe 10-20 games needs to happen here. Basically we would be saying if you have a concussion (or act like it) then it may be acceptable to contact a referee. You enter a really gray area if you don't suspend him and again I don't think it was malicious intent after watching him get crushed into the wall and how he was bobbing his head up & down in pain.

I posted that seeing that video and assuming it was an intentional act, I'm not so sure now.
