Yeah, but you'll go back to curling tomorrow to find out fat boy's newest choking method.

What a nice run of games (starting with the Slovakia-Czech matchup last night). Both of the favorites went to shootouts and lost a little luster. The U.S. is looking a lot better after the last two games. It's an incredibly deep field. I don't think the Swiss have enough to medal, but Slovakia/Czech/U.S./Finland/Sweden/Canada/Russia are all good enough to do so. Once the final 8 teams are set, it's going to be incredibly fun to watch. These prelim games are already full of intensity.

And who reminded y'all not to count out Slovakia? I'm feeling precient this morning.
If Sweden can beat the Kipper, they will likely be the 1-seed.

I would have loved to see the Swiss beat em again. A national day of mourning would take place..
Oh well, lets f'em up Sunday!

Hard to believe, but we will be in first place after the second round of games (maybe tied w/ SWE & FIN). I'm SHOCKED that the Slovaks were able to pull that out. That hurts Russia even worse than the Swiss did Canada. Now they have to beat the Czechs in regulation to win the group. The Czechs can play for a tie.
This might be the best Olympic hockey tournament EVER! (Well, at least since 1980!)

Uhhhh don't you have to beat Canada to make through as the top seed Sunday?

That SO was unbelievable. Russian coach should be fired on the spot. And Ovechkin should get an arse-kicking from his teammates for going along with it.
That team is a picture postcard of ego hogs not playing for each other.
He made a decision I'd expect from your average hockey fan on this site. "OMG I want to see Ovy and Kovy in teh shootout they are so good!!"
Yeah, the shooters should have been Kozlov, Datsyuk, and Semin, with Ovechkin as a number four option.

To be fair, he was the only one who scored in the initial group of 3. Giving him a second shot made sense in that context; I didn't think he should've taken a 3rd that soon though. I don't know the SO % for those guys, but Datsyuk is the one I expected to get another shot (at least before the 3rd for Ovechkin).

Ovie % at penalty/shoot out attempts is shitty, his 3rd attempt should have been buried. The worst one of all was Malkin's try

I am stunned by what's happening so far. The US is in a good position to get a bye to the knock out rounds. A win would be incredible, but even an OT loss might seal us in the top 4 with 7 points.

Yeah, I went back and looked at the SO % for some of the Russians in the NHL. Kozlov, Kovalez, and Datsyuk all had over 50% success rates (with at least 6 shots). Ovechkin is only 1 of 6. I understood Canada's strategy with letting Crosby shoot twice (he has the highest % in the NHL at 75%-6 of 8), but the Russians definitely went overboard with allowing 3 for Ovechkin.

Dammit I missed all these hockey games yesterday because I was busy and because of whatever bullshite was on that my roommate was watching. I'm catching an internet feed if I have to next time.

More good news with Belarus showing up against Sweden this afternoon. Even if the US and Sweden both lose Sunday, we should still be ahead of them in goal differential. (currently +3) Now we need a strong showing by Latvia against the Czechs!
