Ohio State's application to trademark the word "THE" has been denied.
Some levity for your Wednesday. Ohio State has apparently been aiming to trademark "THE" as in "THE Ohio State," but alas for the Buckeyes marketing office, the most common word in the English language will continue to work as a free agent. The ill-fated application was initially filed on Aug. 8.

Were they only trying to trademark its use with the name of a university? Surely they didn't waste money trying to get a blanket trademark on the word "the".
