Its not high sticking when you hit your own teammate
Was the stick not high? Did it not hit someone in the face and draw blood? The point of the penalty is to deter loose sticks.

Speaking of loose sticks, what is it with the orphan sticks in the NHL?
somebody looses a stick, and it just stays there. no one, not a player, not a linesman deigns to pick it up or at least push it aside. just stays out in the middle.
is it an unwritten rule? or bad luck? seems nonsensical for a stick to remain in the middle of the ice and play on. somebody breaks a bat in baseball, they clean up the remains. don't just let the bat stay on the field.

That's a good question. I was also curious why during the game last night a Sabers player had his stick break about a foot and a half down from the top. But instead of using what remained of his "now shorter" stick he left it on the ice and went without. I'm assuming that it's illegal to use a partial stick during play?

I love Montreal, but it feels like they stole two series.

Conference Finals get underway tonight out west
I'm happy for the earlier starts for my sleep, but it does create more watching problems with kids bath/bed and them being awake for half the game etc
Cale is definitely not 100% and won't be for the rest of the playoffs. Can only hope that he doesn't aggravate injuries and still play effectively. This Avs team is deep enough to win without full on Cale, but still need his presence and avoid more D injuries. Bednar is playing injuries close to vest as usual but seems everyone else is good to go.
Vegas PK has been really good and I worry about giving up SHG here given Avs meh PP. Hart has played above his level but has confidence. Stone's availability may have more an impact on this series than Cale's.
Would love to head out to a game and have a good friend in Vegas going to a few but the schedule does me no favors.
TLDR doing these train of thought posts day of game help with my game day anxiety but Let's Go Avs!

Per NHL Rulebook:
10.3 Broken Stick – Player - A broken stick is one which, in the opinion of the Referee, is unfit for normal play.
A player without a stick may participate in the game. A player whose stick is broken may participate in the game provided he drops the broken stick. A minor penalty shall be imposed for an infraction of this rule.
A player who has lost or broken his stick may receive a replacement stick by having one handed to him from his own players’ bench, by having one handed to him by a teammate on the ice or by picking up his own unbroken stick or that of a teammate from the ice.
A player will be penalized if he throws or shoots a stick to a teammate on the ice, or if he picks up and plays with an opponent’s stick. A player may not participate in the play using a goalkeeper’s stick. A minor penalty shall be imposed for an infraction of this rule.
A player using a stick thrown on the ice from the players’ or penalty bench will not receive a penalty. However, the person responsible for throwing the stick will receive a bench minor penalty.
10.4 Broken Stick – Goalkeeper - A goalkeeper may continue to play with a broken stick until a stoppage of play or until he has one legally provided to him by a teammate. The teammate cannot throw or shoot it to the goalkeeper (this includes situations where the goalkeeper has lost his stick and a teammate is trying to return it to him). For a violation of this rule, a minor penalty for throwing the stick shall be assessed to the offending player (no penalty to the goalkeeper for receiving the stick).
A goalkeeper whose stick is broken or illegal may not go to the players’ bench for a replacement but must receive his stick from a teammate. A goalkeeper may participate in the play using a skater’s stick until such time as he is legally provided with a replacement goalkeeper’s stick.
For an infraction of this rule, a minor penalty shall be imposed on the goalkeeper.

They can win without him, but that does not inspire much confidence for the rest of the playoffs. If an injury can't get better after a week of rest and no practice, it won't any time soon.

I know his shoulder has been hurting. Hopefully he didn't tear anything.

not really brother.
we outplayed buffalo in games 1 through 5.
they outplayed us in game 6 regardless of our choke. have to give them credit.
they outplayed us half of game 7. we outplayed them in OT. just so happens that OT decided the series.
We hung with tampa. went back and forth. all 1 goal games. remember we had a chance to win both series in 5 or 6 games if you go back and look and the leads we blew in both series(game 4 tampa and game 6 buffalo) and take away the flukey goal that cost us game 4 to buffalo.
we are tired and lacking in many spots and carolina is rested and has been on vacation.
hopefully they are complacent and flat like many MLB teams who win division and get a bye for the WC when the division series comes up they get beat because of no action, cold and playing a hot team.
we do need to use all our guys tho to keep fresh legs out there. we started to tire in games 6 and 7 against the sabres. you could see it. but these guys are 25 years old on average. not 45 or 55 or 65.
they should be in top condition. MSL needs to switch up the 1st line but he is hard headed like les miles.
we got revenge on tampa for 2021 and 2015
got it on buffalo for 1998
we owe carolina for 2002 and 2006 where we choked both series away.
if we lose i am good. huge success this season. we over achieved this year. still rebuilding. next 5 years should be good. need to add some key players.

Let’s go Avs. Toews, Manson, Malinksi and company need to make up for Cale’s absence. Plenty of talent and depth to win without him.

Wedgwood with some nice saves early, including on a breakout.
Posted on 5/20/26 at 7:28 pm to Bunk Moreland
Need Wedgie to be dialed in. Keep pressuring the offensive zone.
