Is that bracket official, as in no re-seeding?

The Philly vs Rags series is going to be a blood bath.

Dallas has beaten Anaheim 2 out of 3 this year.

Anaheim will probably win but I think it goes 6 and maybe even all 7.

Some good first round matchups. I'm going to pick each series, as an experiment, solely on their FenClose. I'm curious how accurate of a predictive tool it is.

Bruins (54.43) over Detroit (51.09)
Tampa (51.47) over Montreal (48.25)
Pitt (50.66) over C-bus (50.56)
Rags (52.92) over Flyers (47.71)

Looking at the numbers, the Penguins-Jackets should be our best bet for a 1st round upset in the East. The fancystats pick everything to go to form in the East.

Dallas (51.92) over Anaheim (49.91)
LA (56.41) over SJ (55.03)
Minnesota (49.49) over Colorado (46.71)
Chicago (55.20) over StL (52.94)

Four of the top five teams in the NHL in FenClose will play each other in the first round. In order to make up for this, the fancystats pick the two teams who have far exceeded their underlying possession metrics to lose in the first round.

Because matchups are now divisional instead of conference. Colorado playing out of their collective gourds mean the 2nd and 3rd place divisional teams play each other.

Some interesting takes here....

quote:

Pitt (50.66) over C-bus (50.56)
Am I reading this correctly? Why is this so close?

Dallas (51.92) over Anaheim (49.91)

Definately will be an interesting series....

quote:

Minnesota (49.49) over Colorado (46.71)

They have the payroll, just didn't perform to expectations during the regular season.

quote:

Chicago (55.20) over StL (52.94)

This is the series I'm looking forward to the most outside of the Rangers / Flyers. Will be a bloodbath.

Because Pitt isn't a very good possession team. Here's the team profile from extra skater:

LINK

The charts won't copy, so here's the long and short of it: the Penguins insist on giving huge minutes to some of their worst possession players. Orpik, Scuderi, Bortuzzo, Sutter, and Engelland are all getting over 15 min/game (except Engelland at 12.9) and all are well under 50% Corsi. Crosby and Malkin giveth, the third line taketh away. The Pens are an incredibly top heavy team. Their top lines are among the very best in hockey, and their bottom lines are among the worst.

Some of that is necessity. The only way to afford some of those contracts is to save elsewhere. So when Crosby or Malkin isn't on the ice, this is a bad team. Also, Niskanen and Despres have been by far their best blueliners in possession, and they don't get corresponding minutes.

Columbus is sort of the polar opposite. Their top line is pretty pedestrian, and might be one of the worst top lines in hockey, but they are extremely deep. There's no drop off even down to the fourth line. Everyone contributes and almost every player is close to a 50% Corsi (with some exceptions, but no one is more than 5% in any direction with more than 500 min played). The Jackets might be the deepest team in the NHL. There is almost no statistical difference between their bottom and top lines.

Thanks for the explanation. The Jackets are definately the polar opposite. Not only the depth from 1st line to 4th line, but also with Bob between the pipes.
