But, if they joined the Big East or Big 10 they would not be playing the traditional rivalry games and I for one do not have issue with them being an Independant.
They still can schedule Navy and USC as their OOC games.

...and in other news, water remains wet.

I say screw ND and the Big Ten should never ask them to join ever again. This is the third time they have been asked recently and should be the last...Missouri should be added now.
Just my two cents.

frick that. This is America. If they don't want to join a conference, they sure as shite shouldn't have to. And they should suffer the consequences of that decision--both good and bad--accordingly. But "forcing" them to do something is fricking absurd.

+1.
I'm amazed at the jealousy of ND and their independence. People are suggesting that they be forced into a conference? WTF? Are these people commies? ND can do whatever they want.

ND should be locked out of the BCS for their insolence, LOL.
They lock themselves out by sucking usually, anyhow.

Why should one team be allowed to collect post season money and not have to share it with a conference like every other BCS school?
This used to be the case that ND would take a whole share of BCS money and not have to split it. Now they don't get as much money as other schools do because they don't have to split it. They get a fraction what they used to get.

ND has the NBC contract. they will not join a conference unless someday NBC cancels the contract.

While that may be true, the bigger picture view is that the NBC contract gives ND national exposure and national broadcasts of its games. Who gets to see the Big Ten games? The midwest? I haven't seen any.
The national exposure on a prime time network has far more valuable that the actual $$ that come through the door under the contract. Plus, ND has a history of being independent and playing a national schedule. I think that drives more of their decision-making that the NBC $$.

um yea they would, its called maning up and playing a legit OOC games. Its an utter joke they schedule a basic cake walk to a BCS game. It is funny they still cant make it

Seriously?
Poor choice of words. I assumed that the article was referencing the contract with the Big Ten Network. I don't have the Big 10 Network so I haven't seen any games on it. Perhaps the article is intended to include the Big 10 games televised on ABC and ESPN.
Regardless, my ultimate point is that while the $$ paid to ND under the NBC contract is less than what would be earned as part of the Big 10, the NBC contract provides ND with a prime time network showing their games to national audiences. To me, that is far more valuable. ND is the only school with such a contract; that is enormously valuable to ND and is unlike any arrangement that any other school has.
If LSU were offered such an arrangement, LSU would be hard pressed not to take it.

Big ten network is in any basic sports package now. Its like 4 channels, plus you got your 1 or 2 big 10 noon espn

Exactly my point. Why trade having all of your home games televised on NBC nationally for having some of your games on the Big 10 Network (part of a cable package) and some of your games on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU and possibly a few games not televised at all?
No brainer. Keep the NBC deal.

Can you find the Irish Catholic equivalent of the term. Oh, wait, I remember . . . "frickin' balls".

The Big Ten has a Saturday game or two on ESPN at 11:00am and a regional game at 2:30pm and sometimes on national tv on Saturday night.
Plus there's the big ten network which is part of basic in most areas of big ten states, available on sat tv and available as part of expanded packages in the rest of the country.
I'd love a sec network like the big ten network. That syndicated SEC network is not national. No tv station in the twin cities (a top 20 market) carried any SEC syndicated games and in many parts of the country that was true. With a cable/sat network more people have the option of getting it and with spillover channels in September you got to see as many as six big ten games on at once and it'll be that way for basketball and you get other sports that way and coaches shows.
I think ND will continue it's independence, but it will never be as relevant as it used to be. ND should join the big ten, ND would get more money than it's NBC contract. It would have a big ten schedule that would preserve it's rivalry games with Michigan State, Purude, and Michigan and add games with Ohio State, and Penn State. Plus games with Iowa and Wisconsin and Illinois always have potential for being important.
With its four non-conference games it can schedule USC, Navy, Army, and BC and others and in most years it'll have 4-5 big ten games that will be easier depending on the seasons other schools are having.

If you're the Big Ten, and Notre Dame says, "We'll join, but you have to take Boston College, too, and we want to play them every year," what do you do?
