They’re the only team in college football with a national fan base.

Fickell gets a bigger job after this season, I bet Cincinnati gives him a call to see if he wants to come back.

Very impressed with his defense in the Peach Bowl.Lots of team speed and confused our guys up front.

I believe they had 4 guys drafted off the defense.

247 shows five guys in the top 200. One of them in the top 100 and he's #70. I guess.

Good enough for the ACC.

With NIL, it's about to mean everything. Notre Dame is on national tv every week, with an exclusive deal with NBC to boot. Those players are gonna get paid.

Perhaps not what it use to be but they have a national following.
Probably the most popular CFB team in NYC,Chicago and Boston. Not sure
any other school except for perhaps Bama could pull off a OTA national TV deal.

Bama is great on the field but they don't remotely have a National fan base. In fact they're the most regional Super-power due to the 60s. They can be ratings killers...on the West and Midwest.

Notre Dame is the most neutral national TV fan base.

Penn State before the pedo scandal was up there. See 1987 Fiesta Bowl.

Bill Schapp said he was riding on the Subway and some guy was humming Hail to the Victors and he said, "oh you're a Michigan alum?" And the guy said, "no, I just love College Football."

Now that's national gravitas.

This. Notre Dame is truly a national team that schedules nationally and has a nationwide fan base. It's why they will never join a conference and would be stupid to do so. If they join a conference they become just another regional program, and their region would be Indiana/Michigan/Illinois.

They'd still stay a national brand. It would be harder, but they would. Plus joining a conference means they are eligible for a first round bye when the playoffs expand. Staying independent means the beat they can ever do is a 5 seed. So what's more important to them - staying independent or being in a better position to win a national championship?

Yes, but they also avoid a CCG by staying independent. So a first round by is a wash if you're avoiding a CCG.

Do what? They've been involved in 5 of the most watched games in the last 25 years
Highest rated CFB games last 25 years

Say what you will, they are getting better and better. Still a ways off from Alabama, but who isn't? They were legitimately a top 5 team.

The problem is that Fickell has been a DC during his career before being a HC. Much like the "Saban" problem that no one is sure how much is the DC and how much is Saban.

I think Freeman will be perfectly fine and is a good mind for the game, but he certainly needs to prove that the defensive prowess at Cincy was at least significantly his and not solely Fickell.

So is every other program worth a damn. South Carolina has had one game in the last 5 seasons that wasn’t on tv.

What your program did decades ago means nothing to a recruit now. No one is going to Alabama because Joe Namath played there almost 60 years ago. No one is going to Notre Dame because Joe Montana played there nearly 50 years ago.

No they aren't...not unless the SECN,BIG10 N,BIG XII are now on every cable system in the country and every ND home game is on OTA national TV.No other program can say that.

Not close to the same as a national OTA broadcast with their own timeslot and ability to be on prime time.ND/Clemson was the highest rated reg season game in 2020

Who said this?NIL was mentioned because their exposure, popularity and they fact they still are successful program.I will say that the entire NIL/big money scenario is being a tad overblown.
