Again the Vancouver Hockey final USA Vs. canada holds the record for most viewers in America ever for a hockey game...soooooo I think NBC who broadcast that game might like a sequel...

They will build this game up as US vs Canada but that doest make any sense bc its not like the red wings are filled with US players.

The olympics had such a high rating because everyone was supporting the US team.

The casual fan will just see this as Toronto vs Detroit and think why on Earth would I want to watch that.

Not sure if serious. Wings over the last 3-4 years have had trouble selling out the Joe...

So? It's the Winter Classic. Quite possibly (no exaggeration) a once in a lifetime event for many of those fans to see the Wings play at home (well... in Michigan) outdoors. So they don't sell out every game in a place where they play 50 times a year. That has nothing to do with the Winter Classic. They could play any team in the NHL and it would sell out in 10 minutes.

The Winter Classic would sell out if they put it in Phoenix. That's not the worry. The sole concern is TV ratings -- teams with national brands.

And if you think American fans will get up for Detroit and Toronto as a stand in for US-Canada in Olympic hockey... well, you are kidding yourself. Though I do think this is a good matchup - they will sell the Original Six aspect of it not the War with Canada aspect.

Hell, Detroit's best player is Swedish.

Agree completely, Baloo. They could easily sell Jackets-Wings if the Jackets were a contender with a star. Has nothing to do with the fanbases. (Though I will add I think the Jackets would have one of the best fanbases in the league if the team was good. And you could say it's like that for anyone, but that's not the case for Nashville, Phoenix, Anaheim [when they were good], etc.).

No, he's Russian.

But let's not get into this now.

I even left it open whether their best player is Lidstrom or Zetteburg...

Their best player is most certainly Datsyuk, who is Russian, although I do love Zetty too. And while Lidstrom has consistently been the most reliable and solid player on the team for 20 seasons now, I don't know that he was ever the *best* on a Wings team that has been pretty consistently loaded since then. But that isn't to take anything at all away from an absolutely magnificent career of his, just a testament to the talent the wings have had for so long. (knock on wood)

Yea this will sell out, the UM-MSU hockey game they held there sold out fairly quickly. Solid matchup, I know the NHL wanted to keep it kinda as only American teams, but this is still good. Let's hope it will be actual winter weather for it, and not this weird 50+ degrees they've had the past 2 years

Lidstrom is one of the best ever but I agree he's never really been the best player on the team Federov and Yzerman were the best then Datsyuk

While I'll grant you Stevie Y, I will take Lidstrom every day of the week and twice on Sunday over Federov. Slick, scoring players of Federov's caliber aren't unique, especially ones who don't play in their own end. Lidstrom is possibly the best shutdown blueliner in NHL history. He's an almost perfect defenseman. He's unique.

Though he is on his last legs.

think about it. picking a canadian team over columbus tells the blue jackets and rightfully so that they can't carry a winter classic. do they even have a hockey rivalry with detroit?

now 20 years from now they'll have enough of a fanbase to travel to one, and they can certainly host one in 50 provided the Shoe is still standing

very good point, the ability of the away team bring fans plays into this as well. The game last year 30k caps fans showed up in pittsburgh and pens fans were pissed
