Build it, and the National Hockey League will come?

That is the question in South Forsyth County.

WSB-TV reports a metro Atlanta businessman is leading a development team that hopes to remake 100 rolling, empty acres surrounded by housing into a mixed-use entertainment district called The Gathering at South Forsyth.

At The Gathering’s core would be a 750,000-square-foot, indoor arena with a seating capacity of more than 18,000—or what project leaders feel would be an optimal size for enticing an NHL franchise to the northern ’burbs, following the Atlanta Thrashers departure in 2011, the news station reports.

In terms of acreage, the potentially multi-billion-dollar The Gathering would dwarf The Battery Atlanta’s 60 acres, which were also transformed from vacant suburban land into a lifestyle district anchored by a pro sports franchise, the Atlanta Braves.

Why would the NHL go back to Atlanta after they failed there once already

Probably because the previous incarnations were due to broke ownership (Flames) and abysmal ownership that deliberately ran the team into the ground (Thrashers)

Twice.

The saying isn't second times a charm.

And certainly building it in a location where no one but the local populace will be able to get to within a reasonable time on most days will absolutely lead to a profitable enterprise. They are free to build it as long as the tax bill only goes to Forsyth Cty. Personally, I would bet on Lake Lanier claiming another victim by busting the Buford dam and washing it out.

Some jagoff state senator will probably try and get the state to fund it.

Blame ownership, not fan support.

And putting the arena where they are planning is perfect for the hockey base in Atlanta. 25 miles north of downtown.

The same thing was said about The Battery/Truist

Every idea of the “perfect” NHL arena location was either in Sandy Springs or Alpharetta. Putting it near Halcyon is asking for a traffic disaster.

Whether it’s off Exit 13 or 14 it might be best for the uppity pricks who are scared of Atlanta will need to get over it because MARTA will need of expansion

Well, as someone who loathes having to get by that area when games are starting and ending, right at the juncture of 75 and 285 just OTP is a far cry from having to get around all the way to the NE miles off of 85 or having to deal with 400/19. However, as I said, as long as they pay for it, I have no problem with Forsyth Cty having a hockey team. They can call it the White Knights.

I find this very odd. The "Atlanta businessman" is an owner of several car dealerships and recently was denied a large tennis/pickleball court center in Roswell. Now he's trying to build something much larger in a different part of town? Seems fishy to me. This is not too far from Roswell and possibly a big F.U. for them turning down the Tennis/Pickleball courts? Also, I don't get how this guy can afford or would get lending for this.

As a side-note, he unfortunately lost a daughter (Angie) way too young to lung cancer less than 4-months after giving birth to a son. Very sad story.

Would be funny but they will be branded as the “Georgia _____”. Have a friend who is in politics up there and said that’s what it will be. He called it before any news broke about it too.

Twice- Calgary Flames and Winnepeg Jets (Thrashers). I guess if Quebec wants a team it has to go through Atlanta first.

I’d build it somewhere in Chamblee/Doraville near the Marta line. Area is blowing up

I went to the BBQGuys at the Halcyon a few weeks ago and it’s a damn haul from Buckhead. Can’t imagine the cost of an Uber if you wanted to drink.
