re: NFL investigating if the Pats deflated footballs

It could only be the Pats balls. Each team controls their own equipment (although, I think the refs actually keep the kicker balls for both teams to ensure no shenanigans). Plus, even if the Pats could somehow get a hold of the Colts' balls, a QB would know the feel of a properly inflated ball and figure it out with a quickness.
So, the Pats were using deflated balls? That makes no sense because it certainly provides no advantage for passing (have you ever thrown a football that was light on some air?). Since you may check from run to pass at the line, you can't count on that ball being beneficial for the back to help them carry the ball more securely.
Dumbass conspiracy theory is dumb.

The Patriots defenders sure did catch the Colts' regularly inflated balls just fine.

The only advantage I can think of is a deflated ball may be easier to grip and throw in the rain.
Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Yes, people in this thread seem mis-informed about the purpose of deflating balls. It would be the Pats deflating their own balls, and it does create an advantage for the QB/receivers. A properly inflated ball by college and NFL standards is hard as a rock, most people would prefer it slightly less inflated so you can grip it and control it better as a passer, plus slightly easier to catch.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, however, laughed when asked about the report. "I think I've heard it all at this point ... it's ridiculous," Brady said Monday morning during his weekly interview with Boston radio station WEEI. "I don't even respond to stuff like this."

Former NFL official Jim Daopolous, in an interview with ESPN on Monday morning, explained the process in which footballs are managed. Two hours and 15 minutes before each game, officials inspect 12 footballs from each team and put a mark on them to indicate they meet the proper requirements and are good for usage. Then those footballs are given to the ball attendant.
quote:
"Officials check balls as they go into the game, and if the ball doesn't feel perfect, they can throw it out," Daopolous said. "There is always the possibility that balls can lose air due to the conditions."
quote:
The NFL's game operations manual states: "Once the balls have left the locker room, no one, including players, equipment managers, ball boys, and coaches, is allowed to alter the footballs in any way. If any individual alters the footballs, or if a non-approved ball is used in the game, the person responsible and, if appropriate, the head coach or other club personnel will be subject to discipline, including but not limited to, a fine of $25,000."

Saints got caught bounty hunting, and you certainly didn't get off the hook for that.
they didn't do anything illegal on the field. every game is officiated on the field, and every game is reviewed afterwards. the saints never had any type of extra illegal hits than anyone.. no players penalized for illegal hits during that span. it was a bs penalty and no where near the same realm as actual cheating.

I just don't understand why they would do it.

Patriots cheat and evidence is destroyed never ever to be seen.
Saints ordeal and evidence is exaggerated and even made up.
If the Saints had actually had illegal hits or players suspended/penalized during that time frame I could understand, but they played within the game and didn't do anything illegal on the field. They truly got fricked with the harshest of penalties and still could be struggling just from the off time of the HC and the lack of a couple of top picks.

I was just being nasty to a person who assumed the Patriots constantly cheat.
Good lord, get off your soap box. Pats cheat wah wah, everyone always hates a winner.

This is what Les Miles should have said when asked "what do you have to say about having to play Alabama again after beating them?"

I think it is 100% obvious that the Pats let teh air out of Luck's balls...

Has there ever been an organization that cheats as much as the Patriots do?

If I recall, it wasn't raining when the game started, so there would have been no reason to tamper with the balls prior to kickoff. If it happened during half-time, you would think the refs would have suspected something, especially since they even had a slight delay to start the second half because the kickoff ball needed to be replaced by the Pats offensive ball.
Also, the refs handled the balls on every play. You would think it there was an obvious change that was meant to make the ball easier to use, they would have noticed.
We will have to wait to see what the league office says, but I think this is a non-issue meant to smear the clearly better team from yesterday.

Absolutely

My guess is A) they do it all the time and don't get caught, or B) had something to do with the wet conditions
Regardless I don't think it's a big deal, and taking away draft picks for something like this is extremely overkill.
