Had an interesting conversation with an NFL defensive coordinator today.

He said philosophically you can no longer build a defense to prevent yardage, the focus of your defense has to be to generate turnovers with modern NFL rules.

Looks like the median is 4.2 punts per team this season.

It was clear the NFL was headed this way.

It's becoming arena football, just still dressed up like traditional football.

I feel like this is even worse in college football. The amount of teams they have the depth on defense to play with these spread offenses are probably less than 10 teams.

Are they arguing it's because of rule changes or just a shift in offensive philosophy? Fact is more teams using spread formations with multiple wide receiver sets, using the passing game to set up the run rather than traditional philosophy of using a run oriented approach to set up the pass. Defensive coordinators are just going to have to be innovative and create something to stop it rather than trying to use the same methods they have always relied on just because it worked 10 or 20 years ago.

Make the first down 15 yards. Maybe that would help.

That might actually make it worse. Then teams will throwing downfield even more.

Pass rushing and turnovers are literally the only things you can rely on.

, NFL QBs are averaging 6.6 net yards per pass attempt this year. That's the highest since 1947. Prior to this year, the 1962 was higher than anything in the past 50 years.

Teams throw the ball more, but they've been more efficient in the past.

ETA - Teams get about 5-10% more yards per play and yards per game now than they've done in the past, but this idea today's offenses are putting up video game numbers on the whole is absurd. 2018 is the highest scoring average in league history, just scraping by 2013, 1948, and 1965.

But but but Brady or Brees is GOAT.

Pitch and catch folks, it's no longer quarterbacking, just pitch and catch, dink and dunk... completion % through the roof.

It's almost impossible to stop a completion in today's NFL.

I mean completing 80% of your passes?

That's where you know the league be has become a joke and nothing but glorified flag football frat passing league.

A turnover or two and forcing the other team into field goal attempts in the red zone is winning football.

Look at the evolution of completion percentages since the inception of the NFL. It has steadily gone up. The rules are move favorable, but the main reason is the evolution of the way the passing game is used. Everything in the past was bombs. The average yards per completion are absurd. 2011 was the highest average this millennium and it still ranks 61st in league history.

This is kind of like the NBA nostalgia, just not as completely outlandish.

I firmly believe it’s not as simple as rule changes and aggressive refereeing. I mean, automatic first down penalties that IMO shouldn’t be are definitely a factor.

I think it’s mostly because QBs have gotten absurdly accurate and receivers are insanely gifted and athletic. Much more so than in past eras. Even just ten years ago.

Couple that with just the “survival of the fittest” evolution of the game.

For example, back shoulder throws being made a staple of the offense or just 50/50 passes that the QB just knows his WR is most likely going to catch it or get a PI.

The goal of a defense is to prevent POINTS not yardage.

It's idiotic that the NFL still uses the yardage metric to rank defenses. It doesn't make a shite hill of difference if a team doesn't give up a lot of yards, but can't keep the other team out of the endzone when they get in the redzone.
