Melvin has won 7 of his last 8. It hasn't been against the greatest of competition though

Yea a gatekeeper like Florian or Sherk would be a good choice.

I don't have a problem with Guida getting a shot if he soundly beats Petits.

LoL..... 2 of his losses at 155 were to LW champs and the other is to a guy who argueably should be the LW champ......

Florian is still a bad arse, bad knees and all. Definitely not what I would consider a gatekeeper

Stevenson or Griffin maybe

re-looking at his last 8 fights, i change my mind. I'd say he's one good fight away (florian?) from a title shot. that loss to Nate Diaz stands out in my mind.

I'll accept that.

Just watched the fights last night and damn Melvin looked good. He's always had top notch athleticism but now it seems that Jackson is able to mold that into a disciplined fighter. Glad to see him doing better.

I was a little disappointed in Barry's performance. Seemed to be going for the 1 shot KO all fight. His defense left a lot to be desired as well. Don't know if I'm the only one though - haven't read through the thread.

I think he matches up well with Frankie and Pettis, and maybe bj.. Gray would just smother him IMO
I agree 100%. His best bet are against guys that stand and swing with him.

No doubt but I think he is a better striker than all of them......doesn't use his feet enough though.

What would you consider a gatekeeper Kbeezy? I would think it would be a top tier fighter that can draw and has talent, but not enough to be champion. A gatekeeper would be better than 80% so they let that special 20% show. That is for sure Florian and Sherk...I know Sherk was champion, but that wont happen again.

Couture needs to be retired by a Machida KO and then become the 3rd man in the booth. Bonnar's alright but it takes him the first 20 minutes to get over his nerves and quit studdering and stammering all over the place.

It was a while back now. It wasn't a case of being dominated or truly bested in skill sets. As much MG's greenhorn ways and/or naivety in walking straight into stupid subs..usually after carrying much the fight and/or leading.

Couture is fantastic in the booth...Kenflo is great also. Bonnar and Mir would be gatekeeper's of the booth.

Nick Diaz:
quote:

"In boxing, when you're a superstar, you get millions of dollars. In MMA, you're not making that kind of money. We're in negotiations right now with [boxing promoter] Don Chargin. We would very much like to take a boxing match. It would probably be at super middleweight [168 pounds]. There have been a few names kicked around. One of them is Fernando Vargas, another is Ricardo Mayorga."

Good lord this is not going to end well. If he gets to a decision with Vargas or Mayorga that would be epic.

no way. he would get KTFO.

I would like to see Anderson Silva's idea eventually happening, of a 3 round mixed fight. something like 1st round-boxing only, 2nd round-kickboxing/muay thai, 3rd round-mmal

A gatekeeper is someone who is a solid, tough fighter. Some one in the middle top of the division. A measuring stick. If you can beat him, you deserve to move up the ladder, if you can't, then you don't really belong.
Kenny Florian and Shawn Sherk do not fit that bill. They are easily in the top 4-8 LWs in the UFC
