Need Help Remembering Old NFL Player

I can't remember his name but Sports Illustrated's website ran an article on him awhile back.
From like the 60s-70s, had a ton of talent but was kicked off like 2-3 different teams for drugs/multiple reasons. Never contributed much of anything

Brian Bosworth or Tony Mandarich? Would have been 80's I guess.

That's all you have on this guy?

Todd Marinovich
1989-90 in college but this is best guess based off the great detail of your description.

Sounds like Hollywood Henderson. He was LT before LT came along, in fact LT wore his number and cited him as his hero. A freakish athlete at LB - so good they used him as a kick returner. But he had major issues on and off the field. I think at one point he was homeless and then he won $30 million in the lottery 20 years ago and got a second chance at being a drug crazed renegade.
Crazy story. Look him up. He's also the guy that said Terry Bradshaw couldn't spell "cat" if you spotted him the "c" and the "t"
My second guess would be Chuck Muncie. Great RB that could have had Walter Payton's career but was a severe drug addict.

I remember hearing his name on the radio awhile back because they were talking about the article on the SI website, but can't remember his name
Wasn't Hollywood but around that timeframe I'm sure. Barely played in the NFL but was an interesting story

John Jefferson WR was the next star WR but got traded out of SD due to issues
Muncie played for 9 years so probably not him
Charles White Heisman winner then drugs
Rick Upchurch all pro Returner
Buster Rhymes Vikings 1st rd pick
George Rogers
Stanley Wilson
Those probably most well known guys
But guys barely playing in NFL
Rogers
Rhymes
White
Best bets

Joe Don Looney? Got kicked out of Texas and TCU then went to JUCO and Oklahoma. First round pick of Giants in 1964 then played for like 5 other teams in five years including the Saints. Was a strange dude. Was always fighting and being a general pain in the arse to coaches. He then got into some weird religion and started drinking his own piss. Died at 45 in a motorcycle wreck. Look him up on Wikipedia.

Wasn’t he in 70’s because got hooked in Vietnam era?
Posted on 2/9/18 at 8:33 pm to sms151t
I think he played from like 64-69. I think he refused to go to Vietnam.
ETA: he was in the Army Reserves and had a lawsuit against the government saying the reserves didn't have to go. Lost and went in 68 then joined the Saints in 69.

He said 60's and 70's
I don't believe any of those players played in those decades. I know it wasn't George Rodgers.

Oh I misread thought said 70’s-80’s
So your pick is best one.

Interesting article. I thought it might me JDL you were thinking of. I either read an article or watched a tv special about him around 10 or so years ago. I remembered him being a strange dude.
