The filing says Sorsby suffers from a "clinically diagnosed" gambling disorder, which is "a mental health condition."

"The NCAA has weaponized his condition to shore up a facade of competitive integrity, while simultaneously profiting from the very gambling ecosystem it polices," the filing states.

Among the claims for declaratory relief in the suit is a request under Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code for the NCAA to be "precluded from enforcing its gambling bylaws against Mr. Sorsby to deny or withhold his reinstatement." It requests that he be eligible to "participate fully" for Texas Tech in 2026, including games. It requests any NCAA action to the contrary be "void and unenforceable."

"The relief is narrow: one student-athlete and one senior season," the filing said. "The NCAA will suffer no cognizable harm from letting Mr. Sorsby play football while this case proceeds. But if this Court does not act, no future judgment can give Mr. Sorsby what the NCAA will have taken from him."

What a joke. So the NCAA should be precluded from enforcing black and white bylaws about gambling but only when it comes to Sorsby

Lawsuit is shite and ultimately the players have some accountability here as they have forced the money issue.. gambling shouldn’t be in anyway attached the NCAA.. college men especially are being destroyed by the gambling bottle that’s been opened directly in front of their face.. yes it’s a choice, but that doesnt preclude making it harder and less appealing to fall into this trap. We are to cliff with no brakes for today’s youth… in respects to gambling. I see it way too much these days and I liken this to the white college version of the crack epidemic in the 80s inner cities.

Honestly the absolute terribleness of this attempted defense might end any NFL aspirations.

That’s how I feel when I sports bet, but that’s not an excuse to bet on your own team. How did he not already have a stake in the outcome by being on the roster? Terrible argument by him

Every single sports league in the world has strict rules against gambling on your own sport and team. Sorsby did both.

Response from NCAA:

quote:

"The NCAA has not received a reinstatement request for this case. The NCAA generally doesn't comment on pending reinstatement requests, but the Association's sports betting rules are clear, as are the reinstatement conditions. When it comes to betting on one's own team, these rules must be enforced in every case for the simple reason that the integrity of the game is at risk."

Gambling was my comfort meal, I’m too neurodivergent to be able to function properly without 8-10 bets on the Sun Belt conference each week. Don’t be ableist

Everything made up is in the DSM....so just about anything you can conjure of which you don't want to take ownership of.

I'm pretty sure the NCAA has weaponized nothing. It has, however, had prohibitions on gambling for years, if not decades.

As long as the NCAA didn't tell Sorsby that he can gamble and have since reneged on that permission, then the NCAA hasn't weaponized anything.

Broke rules. Now doesn't want to take accountability. All traits you want as your qb 1

They did think of allowing betting on professional sports. It was proposed and after 30 days, it was rejected by a majority of the member institutions.
quote:

An October, 2025 proposal from the NCAA Division I Administrative Committee would have allowed players and athletic department members to bet on professional sports. This proposal was rejected in November by the NCAA's member institutions in a vote which required two-thirds support.

Problem for Sorsby is that he ALREADY had bet not just on college sports, not just on his sport, but also his own team . . . in 2022.

The bigger problem:
quote:

Unfortunately for Sorsby, precedent established by the NCAA suggests his college career may be over. In 2021, Iowa State backup quarterback Hunter Dekkers placed 366 bets with DraftKings, totaling to $2,799 including a $15 bet in a Cyclones game he did not play in. When the betting scandal broke in 2023, the NCAA went on to rule Dekkers permanently ineligble. Dekkers would transfer to Iowa Western Community College after missing the entire 2023 season.

But he didn't play in the game(s)?
quote:

As of the latest NCAA guidelines in 2023, athletes who wager on their school's sports could face "permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports." This penalty applies whether or not the athlete participated in the games that were the subject of gambling.
