Disclaimer: It's Thamel and all.

quote:

College basketball is scheduled to start its season on Wednesday. If, that is, there are any remaining teams, healthy coaches or programs still up and running.

That’s a slight exaggeration, of course. Duke, Arizona and Tennessee all lost games on Monday. The A-list of coaches sidelined with COVID-19 includes Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Baylor’s Scott Drew and Tennessee’s Rick Barnes. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo just returned. There will be more, especially with an indoor contact sport happening during flu season.

“It’s going to be a nightmare,” Iona coach Rick Pitino told Yahoo Sports. “They’re just trying to rush it to get to March, and it’s not worth risking everyone’s health.”

A bleak spree of breaking news the past 72 hours leaves the sport at a crossroads. College basketball is crumbling in front of us because of greed, competing agendas and a lack of leadership. By foolishly deciding to play non-conference games, the sport is now risking what it really needs in the long term – a way to play conference games and, most importantly, play the NCAA tournament.

quote:

The virus has spiked so precipitously around the country that it’s beginning to look negligent to send teams criss-crossing the country – many flying commercial – against the recent recommendations of the Centers For Disease Control. “At this point, I’m not sure why we’re trying,” said a major conference official. “I wonder if in like 10 to 14 days it will be shut down.”

I know he is one of the kings of the coronabros, but I do think playing nonconference games is dumb. Start conference games in December and you have like three plus months to get in about 20 games.

I don't get sports writers who actively root against the sport they cover especially in a dying industry.

There is going to be a mass panic come mid December once everyone is good and infected from Thanksgiving. Go ahead and prep yourself now for hysteria abound and game cancellations across all sports.

Anyone else find this odd?

Interviewing Pitino for any national story is dumb. But to have Rick “I’ll pay you to abort our child” Pitino warn us about health risks is just nuts to me. And it’s not like he’s a national presence anymore. He’s at Iona.

It keeps them at an elite level above the trash (fans) who actually enjoy the sport

You see, they're journalists, they're not here to enjoy the game or make friends

I think this is how Forde and Thamel rationalize that they've devoted their lives to writing about games instead of war or whatever actual journalists write about

If I were making a pros and cons list of cancelling the basketball season Pete Thamel and pat forde possibly not writing another article again would be in the pros list. I’d feel kinda bad about that since they likely have a wife and kids who depend on them but since they’re advocating for it and tried to stop football who am I to get in the way.

Because their desire to virtue signal outweighs their ability to think rationally with respect to their careers. You have to remember, for the overwhelming number of "journalist"/reporters their pay is shite. That's because with the advent of the internet the breadth of information available and the media outlets to provide it is greater than at any point in history. That means the demand for guys like Thamel is next to nothing.

So how do you supplement low wages? By developing a superiority complex. "Well, I may not get paid a ton, but I sleep well knowing I am the bastion of morality for the mindless populace". The athletes they cover can monetize their "worth" in pay. Lebron James gets paid a ton because of his ability. Journalist "monetize" their worth in a false and wholly self created perception of great importance. Their salaries don't measure their worth (because they aren't very high). Their moral place in the world does.

don’t forget to draw the distinction between those opinion journalists and the ones who cover the actual games and stick to sports and describing the action
