@WojYahooNBA
Lottery reform vote at NBA Board of Governors Wednesday. 23 of 30 votes to pass. Philly/OKC will vote "No" but support short on stopping it.

This may open an interesting scenario with the possibility of Philly suing the league for changing the rules in the middle of their rebuild and I actually would support them.

I think if you are gonna to change the rules they shouldn't go into effect for at least 2 or 3 years from now. Too many picks up in the air due to draft protections and teams designing their rebuild around current rules.

I do like the proposed change though.

I'll find a better link, but basically provide a better chance for the teams later in the lottery to get a top 5 pick.

eta:

quote:

Under the terms of the new proposal, the league's four worst teams will have an equal 12 percent chance of earning the top pick, with the next two teams following with only slightly worse odds. The league would draw ping pong balls for the top six spots instead of the top three, so the worst team is guaranteed to pick no worse than seventh. The odds for the other selections would be as follows.

quote:

Proposed dds of No. 1 pick for teams 7-10: 8.5%, 7%, 5.5 %, 4%. All have 13%-plus shot at top-3.

quote:

Four teams w/ best record (11-14) would have, in order, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2.5% chance at No. 1 pick and better chance than today of moving into top-6

quote:

Currently, only three spots are drawn and the worst team is guaranteed to finish no lower than fourth. The worst team has a 25 percent shot to win the lottery, followed by a 19.9-percent chance for the second-worst team and a 15.6-percent chance for the third-worst. This old system had persisted since 1993.

Want it changed, but agree teams should be given a few seasons to prepare for it.

I tend to agree with that on some levels, but the NBA is seriously pissed at Philly. Silver and the other owners consider it bad for the game.

No team has ever gone to these levels to intentionally tank. It is pretty unbelievable what they are doing.

It shifts the odds so there's less separation basically.

I have never understood why it doesn't go by W/L record.

Because getting 1 player can change the trajectory of a franchise in the NBA way more than any other sport tbh.

Why aren't all the small market teams fighting this?

Philly should be pissed. They shouldn't let this go through until a few years from now. Not fair considering all of the trades involving picks. You can't just change the value of picks that have been traded.

Because good small market teams like the Grizzlies or Pels could remain competitive, barely miss out on the playoffs, and end up with a top 5 pick. I'm fine with it considering how competitive the West is.

Still wish the lottery was based 1-14 on record alone and conference affiliation was ignored though.

While it's BS that they are changing it on such short notice, it will be hilarious to see Philly get fricked over after clearly tanking

I was surprised to see OKC fighting it with them, but then remembered their entire roster was basically built through the draft and the possibility exists that they lose KD and/or Westbrook in the upcoming years.

Basketball is a sport where it is extremely easy to intentionally be bad. On the flipside, one player turns a team from a laughingstock into a contender.

Some teams in the late 70s/Early 80s were just absolutely abysmal...intentionally so. It was really bad for the sport so they tried to take away the incentive to be intentionally terrible.

frick the 6ers. theyve gone way beyond the spirit of NBA rebuilding and turned it into a mockery. seems most teams and adam silver agree with me...

and ultimately, it will lessen the reward for losing games intentionally, unintentionally. which will be better overall for the sport.

They could just be fighting it on principle too because it definitely is questionable changing it in this timeframe

Nah frick Philly.

This is why I wish there was a way to use a relegation system in the NBA. You want to win 12 games a year? Fine, but you'll be in the D league next year.

I'll find some perverse pleasure in it as well.

I mean I get what they are doing: the last thing you want to be is a treadmill team, and they are just taking it to the next level. Being REALLY terrible and trading away anything that will make them any good until they hit the lottery.

But the way Hinkie is being haled as a genius really irks me a little bit.

This is true, but I still feel no sympathy for Philly
