Breaking: The NBA's Board of Governors has passed new anti-tanking rules that include expanding the draft lottery from 14 to 16 teams, a relegation zone where the bottom 3 teams get penalized with lessened chances for the No. 1 pick, and flattened odds, sources tell ESPN.

The "3-2-1 lottery" is named to represent the number of lottery balls per team. Teams with a bottom-three record -- the relegation area -- have only two lottery balls. Teams that do not qualify for the playoffs or play-in tournament in spots four through 10 receive three lottery balls each.

The Nos. 9 and 10 play-in seeds in each conference receive two lottery balls each, and the losers of the 7-8 play-in games receive one lottery ball each. All 16 teams will in the drawing.

No team will be able to win the No. 1 in consecutive years or be able to win three consecutive top-five picks.

That league is doing its best to erase the very little credibility it has left.

Seems to be that mediocre teams are going to be trying to avoid the play-in. This will create a new problem. NBA is so stupid. It's like the government just adding more laws without considering the consequences.

I don’t have a firm opinion on this yet will need to see how it works out.

Some positive might come of it.

Future picks might be worth more. Some teams truly did tank and that allowed them to avoid giving up protected picks they traded away. For example if a team owns the others pick top 4 protected that other team will tank if sitting at 5 spot.

Tanking also changes playoff seeding. Some teams end up playing tanking teams in later part of season and get guaranteed wins which helps them in seeding. If they play a team not tanking its much harder and will cause more losses. Seeding is important in your opponents in playoff tree.

Fans go to watch good games or certain players. If team is tanking less chance best players play (for both teams). This change likely makes games better for fans.

Time will tell. There are downfalls too.

Your OKC thunder rested all their players when I paid to see them in San Antonio for the last or second to last matchup of the two. They were dealing with injuries but then they just threw all their starters on the injured list. Yall had about 8 players available that game.

So not sure any tanking rules would solve that. And stars on tanking teams are still not going to play every game, or close to it. SGA on the defending champs didn’t even come close to doing it. So why would somebody on a tanking team.

Well that was a different scenario. OKC wasn’t going to play starters vs SA to give anything away for potential playoff meetup. I don’t know how you fix that. SGA did have a late season injury they wanted to fully let heal too. Had the game meant anything for seeding he woulda played. But why risk re-injury when seeding was settled.

SGA is injured so let’s rest the whole team? Yeah makes perfect sense to me.

That seems worse than trying to help your chances for a good draft pick next season.

Literally folding a game. Calling it in. They should have been fined

He wasn’t the only one hurt, I used him as a prime example.

But I agree. NBA fixed the bottom part but needs to also fix the top part too, for fans sake.

Plus if a game won't have any impact on your season it's a good opportunity to get meaningful reps for your bench.

Anyone who actually spends their money on a regular season NBA game is an idiot. The players simply don’t care and don’t play defense. The playoff game ps are very high level games, even with the flops, because the players care.

I’d say the same for regular season MLB games but a baseball game is a fun time to visit friends and family so I get attending a few games.

You can definitely say that and it's one of the reasons why okc is successful. - their depth is amazing.

So there will be playoff teams that make the lottery? That’s just dumb.

This was actually a direct result of San Antonio selecting in the top 5 for 3 straight years.
