From another poster's post:
There's your research experience.
Again, why the scrutiny? Do you know whether or not any of the other winners from that year (posted above) speak a foreign language?
Again, why the Rolle bashing?
Obviously, being an athlete wasn't what his application hinged upon, as you implied, because there are other athletes who made the cut whom you seem to have no problem with.
It really can't be his major, as other majors there weren't as rigorous.
It can't really be "lack of research".
So what is it? If you're pissed off about the media coverage, just say so, but to imply that he's undeserving of a Rhodes Scholarship without any real justification is a bit problematic. Heck, if you graduated from UF, I can totally see the animosity.

From Psych Ward's post, which I am assuming is from the FSU athletic department's press release:
I believe that he also did some work with free clinics in the Bahamas.

Didn't see that post.

Yes I know of others from personal experience.

Not so much pissed as I am wary. Our media has a tendency to build up expectations that are impossible to achieve, and then later have stories about how those people failed.
I suppose my concern is that if Rolle was a participant from another sport not as popular as football, would he be afforded the same opportunity with the credentials he has now? That's difficult to answer, I admit, but it seems that the media has built him up to such a degree that it would be impossible for him to live up to the expectations placed on him.
I know a kid who graduated from university after two years at 19. He spoke three languages, was published and did undergraduate research with some of the top people in his field. What is the difference between him and Rolle? That's what I want to know, if only for the sake of discussion, and as a way to justify Rolle's own selection.

Being an all-american dosen't guarantee you NFL success.
You willing to bet against Rolle at anything?

So you know from personal experience that the other winners who played sports that I listed above spoke another language?

That's valid.

The media build up didn't start until AFTER he was awarded with the Rhodes Scholarship...

Again, why only pick on Rolle? What about the other applicants whom you feel were less qualified than your friend? Maybe your friend's interview was poor. Who knows? At the end of the day, who cares?

Was he an All American football player? Did he start a charity? Because that sounds pretty frickin different
