Does anyone have any numbers as to Pool's debt situation? I'd be interested to see how bad things actually are. I'm wondering whether the debt is incurred by the owners and some holding company, or through the club itself.

Do you know whether or not any of the other winners from that year (posted above) speak a foreign language?

Yes I know of others from personal experience.

If you're pissed off about the media coverage, just say so

Not so much pissed as I am wary. Our media has a tendency to build up expectations that are impossible to achieve, and then later have stories about how those people failed.

I suppose my concern is that if Rolle was a participant from another sport not as popular as football, would he be afforded the same opportunity with the credentials he has now? That's difficult to answer, I admit, but it seems that the media has built him up to such a degree that it would be impossible for him to live up to the expectations placed on him.

I know a kid who graduated from university after two years at 19. He spoke three languages, was published and did undergraduate research with some of the top people in his field. What is the difference between him and Rolle? That's what I want to know, if only for the sake of discussion, and as a way to justify Rolle's own selection.

Obviously. And that's alright. Disagreement is good.

So what's your REAL reason for not liking Rolle's selection?

Because, from my admittedly myopic viewpoint, he isn't a stellar candidate. Though from the WSJ link, he does seem to be an energetic and charismatic young man. I am charmed by his earnestness, and it is perhaps that same charm won over the committee.

By the way, why is it that you capitalized the world "real" in your initial question? The thought crossed my mind that perhaps you thought my reluctance to agree with Rolle's candidacy had a racial dimension, but you worded your question so that if I answered the implicit question I would then be cordoned off as a racist. Though now I seem to have cornered myself by admitting to some racial undertones that were not at all present in your question, thus opening the door for you to write off my opinion as that of a petty racist, which I am not. I am simply asking what I said previously gave you the idea that I disagreed with Rolle's legitimacy based on race?

With reference to your link, I notice nearly all the other candidates have prior research experience. What research has Rolle conducted at FSU? Does he speak any foreign languages? I am absolutely open to someone convincing me of the legitimacy of this selection.

Why only Rolle?

Though he is obviously smart, I don't think his credentials warrant a Rhodes scholarship or the subsequent media attention he received. How you assumed I had an issue with ALL athletes who received Rhodes scholarships, including Pete Dawkins, is beyond my ability to understand.

however how much did bayern pay for all of those guys combined? 60M? maybe 70M?

You moron.

Toni-11 million Euros or 15 million dollars
Robben-25 million Euros or 35 million dollars
Gomez-30 million Euros or 42 million dollars
Ribery-25 million Euros or 35 million dollars
Klose-undisclosed but since he was bought by Bremen for 5 million Euros, I would have to guess he was around 20 million Euros or 28 million dollars
Podolski-10 million Euros or 14 million dollars
Schweinsteiger-Youth Academy product
Lahm-Youth academy product

So right there from all the guys you mentioned, Bayern payed 155 million dollars. Even without Klose, whose fee was undisclosed, that is around 120 million. But you're right, Bayern has no money.
quote:

no fricking way

Bayern is one of the best run clubs in the world. Absolutely efficient. If he wanted to go there, and there would be some assurance that Torres would be able to repay them through play, then they would be able to fork over the money easily. You underestimate how much money they have. Just because they choose to be financially strong, and not spend inordinate amounts of money does not mean they do not have the capability to spend that amount of money.

quote:

i doubt they have the money to sink 80-90M euros for 1 player. the big scandal a few years back hurt them

While this is true, again you underestimate how rich Juventus actually is. They would have to sell some players, but they could afford it.

quote:

i doubt atletico could afford him

unless ronaldo or kaka has something against torres, i just don't see a fit financially and in terms of opportunity

Jesus, are you this dense? He won't go to Real because he played for Atletico. If he does, then it will be one of the shocks of the century.

Should Rhodes scholarships be reserved for those who are able to play sports in college? Those kids all look to have better resumes than Rolle, whose primary accomplishment seems to be graduating in an easy major in five semesters along with playing mediocre football for a mediocre football team.

What about Pete Dawkins?

It just seems like such a shame for such a talent to be handcuffed to a sinking ship in the prime of his career. I'd love to have him at Stamford Bridge.

While financially they are in a bad position, Torres can still succeed. 11 goals in 14 PL appearances isn't a bad number. And it is my belief that it is a tactical problem with Pool. Last year with Alonso, they were able to play the "dump and chase" style of long ball, utilizing the work ethic of their wingers to stretch the field, thereby opening holes in the opposition defense.

This year, they have played with two predominantly holding midfielders, neither of whom have the passing range to play that style. Thus the field is much smaller, and the pace is usually dictated by the opposition. Aquilani might be the answer, but Beneitz's reluctance to play him in that position is odd, perhaps indicative that he believes the physical strength of opposition midfielders might adversely affect Aquilani. I doubt this, as Aquilani played in Serie A, which, although a much slower league, is as physical as the EPL. All it might take is a tactical switch to result in a change of fortune, but I do not know if it will happen.

if real wants to spend enough, just about anybody would go there

Spending isn't the issue. A simple drive through the respective areas of Madrid would suffice. If he does need to be sold, I am sure Chelsea would be willing to part with whatever number Liverpool comes up with. And Bayern can afford anyone as well. Italy would definitely be an option. Juventus has an aging strike-force with Iaquinta, Amauri, Trezegut, and Del Piero all in their late 20s/early 30s. They could afford him, as well as Inter Milan. AC Milan could be an option, but I don't know how solvent their financial situation is. If worse comes to worse, I could see Atletico selling off Aguero and Forlan to have El Nino return.

Hardly the antecedent for a Rhodes scholar. Does he speak any other languages? He resume apparently hinges on playing Division I football.

No one can deny that Liverpool always seems to have a squad that is built for Europe. And it is most definitely poor money management that has led Liverpool to be in this position.

If one looks at two of the more fiscally stable clubs, Manchester United and Arsenal, both have quite a bit of debt yet still remain viable both in Europe and in the EPL. Please point out to me the difference between the these two clubs and Liverpool. I find the difference is simply that Liverpool has a poor academy in comparison. An academy can offset some costs by either producing world-class players or selling off marginal players. What player has Pool produced since Gerrard? I honestly don't know. Manchester United used a great academy class as the springboard to EPL titles. Arsenal completely restructured its academy in 1996, and has made upwards of 50 million dollars selling off players. And these two academies are fairly average in comparison to some of the better academies in England.

You always build a football club from the ground up. Until Liverpool overhauls its academy structure, any spending will be a temporary resolution.

He aims to be a doctor, correct? That degree sounds like it entails the course work of a physical education instructor. And he got a Rhodes scholarship for that?

I once had a professor at Oxford (visiting professor at my undergraduate institution) who looked like Jack Nicholson when he played the Joker from one of the Batman movies. She was a quite stupid Wittgenstein...ian.

What was Mr. Rolle's undergraduate education in? Though Florida State has a less than stellar reputation, there are some departments there that could certainly compete with the Ivies. Perhaps his choice of university is indicative of a specific departmental superiority rather than outright reputation?

if torres is on the market real may jack off onto benzema's face as they sell him off

As Torres played for other club in Madrid (hint: Not Getafe) I would be surprised if he would make the move to the Castellana. Perhaps you have a link of substance that shows Torres is willing to move to Real specifically?

Well that's certainly understandable. But in my experience, Liverpool (at least since 1989) and Newcastle (since 1996), have the most obnoxious fans. I suppose I could best describe it as an inherent sense of entitlement, and a certain feeling of superiority that is a by-product of that entitlement. Discussing football with each is a fruitless endeavor that now I only smile politely until I can disengage myself from their plebeian patois.

I find the opposite to be true, especially through my various sojourns through the Albion. I despise most English teams, but I find nothing more deplorable than Liverpool fans. They are the same as any other, but because they sing a stupid song, they think they are "better" for it. Laughable.
