Really? Article says over the last several yrs, up to 50 athletes purchased cars through them.
Correct.
It also says the Dispatch reviewed 24 transactions. They also had car-valuation companies assess the prices of those cars. They found nearly half of those transactions weren't as high as what the companies valued them at. The companies also said these differences could be cause of certain conditions of the cars sold, and never stated how substantial of differences these were.

So, they bought cars at alleged reduced rates
This really hasn't been proven whatsoever yet. The two former NCAA investigators said it's basically fishy so many purchases happened within such few dealerships.

ALL the players decided to get crappy cars

per article

The values they estimated were higher than the price paid in nearly half of the transactions. However, they said it's difficult to accurately evaluate the sales without seeing the vehicles to assess condition and options.

I think its fishy I'm just hoping that if that's all the evidence that they can't get in trouble. I really just wanna avoid bowl bans

It's fishy, but if Doug Archie thinks no NCAA rules were violated, then I believe him. Especially if these salesman contacted him with all the transaction details before the deal became final. The only thing that worries me is this Kniffin dude seems fishy as frick.

Yeah and it is offered to the general public.
You are focusing on the wrong thing here.
The question is if another student with the same credit profile, income (nil) etc... walked onto the dealership.... would he get a car with nothing down.
If so, then they maybe fine (although I suspect the car dealership would be bankrupt). If not, then you have an extra benefit by definition.

From the article:
quote:
Both dealers, whose businesses are not connected, say they routinely call Archie's office when an athlete is ready to buy a car, provide the purchase price and discuss who will co-sign on a loan. Archie said he relies on the car dealers to provide accurate information.
"I'm not a car expert. We have to rely on their integrity and their word when it comes to selling a car," he said. Ohio State runs "spot checks" on some transactions against the Kelley Blue Book value.
Yes, as long as the guy who is relying on the integrity of a used car salesman says the are clean, then I am fine with it too

Credit companies wouldn't care if a kid plays football or not.
Unless these were "buy here, pay here" types of places, then that would be applicable.

I completely agree, which is why zero down with no income is a touch suspicious, wouldnt you say?

Without seeing the paperwork it's hard to say. I've never had to make a down payment on a car in my life. There also may be co-signers involved on many of these loans. That would make a huge difference.
Posted on 5/9/11 at 8:27 am to VABuckeye
Zero down happens frequently when the car is sold on a steep discount in relation to the book value of the car. So they could have been selling them cars for a loss which would obviously be in violation.
But I don't get why they would do that, just for some tickets they could buy from not discounting the cars?
Too many holes in the story to make an accurate judgment at this point.

Who is co-signing for these kids is another question.
I am just glad the Pryors were able to get 3 or 4 cars for the family... I was worried they were borderline destitute.

Clarett and Smith both had car issues right?
I think it's pretty safe to assume that JT needs to be held liable for all of whatever is going on, on top of the coverup.
I think he needs to go, and Urban Meyer is NOT the guy I want running our program.
Hopefully Fickell comes out gangbusters.
