It just isn't. Stop with this. The NBA was better in the late 80's and 90's and it isn't close.
Sure thing. People are just bigger, stronger, faster, smarter with better training and information then ever before and world records are flying off the board in all sports. But the Nba was better 30 years ago

Bulls were obviously more impressive and it isn't close right now when considering they won 6/7 years during that period with mj.

Heat aren't done yet though. Have to wait and see.

to think anything regarding athletics was better 30 years ago is the most ignorant thing someone can say. If I'm saying it in 30 years I hope some young kid kicks my old delusional arse

let's not forget the increasing use of analytics and the major jump in coaching/strategy that is used today, also

intimidating physical specimens. they certainly show how much more physical the NBA was in the 80s

MJ benefited from a relatively weak NBA that had simple defensive rules.

It's not at all. And you could actually be physical in MJ's nba

The tradeoff is that the average player in today's NBA > the average player in MJ's days. The worse players are better now than they were then.

indeed, the NBA is a much more demanding game than ever before.

some of the plebeian SGs in Jordans era wouldnt even be able to make NBA rosters today

The NBA is clearly better today. There is no way Jordan and the Bulls could compete with the Spurs, Pistons, Heat, and Lakers of the 2000's.

Pretty spot on.

To anybody saying the NBA was better and the players were more skilled in the 80's... go and do something for me.

Go to Youtube and search for any NBA Finals games in the 1980's and watch just 10 minutes of it.

If you watch it, you will see bad simplistic defense, rudimentary offense, and a free-throw fest.

You guys are just being nostalgic if you think teams of the 1980's would beat teams today.

I was a teen/young adult then and I am middle aged now. I watched both eras and there is no doubt that the NBA was more competitive then with better all-around players and teams.
That explains it. You are being nostalgic.

Or you just didn't realize what you were watching back then when you were young.

It's like watching a movie you used to love as a kid, and then going back and watching it as an adult and realizing how terrible that movie actually was.

As a kid that movie seemed awesome. As an adult you realize that movie was terrible.

People always remember the past better than it actually was. Not just with sports either

I can remember songs that came out in the late 90's that people thought were garbage when they came out that were "killing real music".

Then you go to Youtube today and look up those songs and all the comments are saying things like "now this is REAL music". Or "I only listen to classics like this". "Real old-school music". "They don't make songs like this anymore... way better than today's garbage".

It's like those people didn't realize that the same stuff being said about today's music was said about the song they are commenting on.

It really blew my mind.

that.

plus only the positive features of the era are remembered (movies, music, athletes, etc).

people always say, "there is a lot of shitty music out today" --when in reality there was just as much shitty music back then as there is now.

today, only the best hits get played from the 80s, 90s, etc - that is why many believe it is sooo great - none of the other crap music from the era gets played anymore

The league was much better during the days of MJ. Now at preseason you can pretty much call who will be in the finals at preseason. The league only carries about three contenders a season. The NBA is San Antonio, Miami and OKC right now. No surprise all three are still alive. The Clippers are close to jump up in that discussion but not quite there yet. The NBA has become the toughest sport to watch because it's too predictable. Match that with the worst home court bias officiating in sports and the product is really bad.
