re: MLS owners predict league will surpass MLB

Because the promise of free college encourages parents to invest in developing their children as soccer players rather than encouraging them to focus on other sports. It’s not about them actually going to college, but the promise of college convincing them to train well enough to open up other opportunities.

But that’s not the same as saying the league is a pyramid scheme that is bad for US player development. That’s also laughable
It is a pyramid scheme, and the relationship between USSF and MLS actually is hurting our national team.

I think MLS teams make money. Maybe the bad ones only do because of league payouts, but that’s not a whole lot different than the hundreds of clubs in Europe that operate in the red with absolutely no financial sense whatsoever.
2/3 of the clubs in MLS don’t make money. Those European clubs still have to operate close to break even bc of FFP. They are not allowed to be way in the red. That and most owners in Europe care more about winning than making a profit. They just want to break even.
quote:
Hundreds of European clubs pay totally unsustainable wage bills on the hope that maybe they get promoted/make a continental tournament. Big clubs do it, little clubs [quote]That is no longer the case bc of FFP
[quote]Regardless, MLS is a fine league, especially considering it’s only existed for 24 years and basically had to pull themselves out of the grave from 2005 onward or so. Lots of room to improve but it’s entertaining and sustainable. Biggest thing to do now is get rid of bad owners like Kraft and increase investment, but easier said than done.
I enjoy it for what it is, but the system protects those bad owners bc there is no consequences for fielding shitty team.

You are so wrong it isn’t even funny
Pay to play cuts out a huge part of the potential player pool bc kids parents can’t afford it

That has more to do with the NBA propping up the WNBA and giving it prime time weekday spots than it is real fan viewership. When's the last time you've ever seen a regular season MLS game on a primetime spot? Maybe one of Zlatan's first few games with the Galaxy
MLS get plenty of prime time matches during the summer on ESPN and FS1 and also late afternoon games.
Problem is no one watches

Soccer is an equivalency sport, as is baseball too.

Isn't summer time a ratings killer?

The difference in players at the age of 19 from college to a professional academy is insane.
Spot on. I would ask the people in here pushing for more college soccer to go look at the amount of players from college that go into the MLS draft and actually make the MLS club, much less compete for national team spots. I mean in the current player pool of regular call-ups Jordan Morris is maybe the only one I can think of. Orlando City, my team, is a bottom half MLS team, and only has 2 former college players that will get any meaningful minutes this year, and one came up through their "academy."
Edit: The last meaningful squad we called in was the Gold Cup, and the only players who played college were Morris, Steffen, Ream, Lovitz, Roldan, and Long. Guess that was 6/14 that played, but Ream, Lovitz, and Roldan shouldn't be regulars, and Long is on the verge.

That’s why I bring up Jack Harrison
Kid didn’t cut it at Manchester United’s youth academy
Ended moving to America to focus on school not soccer. Ended up going to wake forest and completely ripped apart the college game for that one year. Goes to MLS and does the same thing lights it up.
This is a dude who basically couldn’t hack it in England. Now that he’s back in England and in the second division he has been an ok player. Nothing like we saw here.

Aaron Long, Walker Zimmerman, DeAndre Yedlin, Darlington Nagbe (if he would actually accept a call up), Zack Steffen, Jackson Yueill, Miles Robinson is starting to get call ups.

I wouldn't call 34 plenty for an entire season. That's just over one per week, but it's a lot more than I thought. The WNBA has more tho and it's not because it's more popular it's due to the NBA and ESPN wanting to prop it up. That was my main point. They should have 2 primetime games a week preferably weekday primetime games.

I think we are seeing different metrics used for different points.
1. Revenue: MLS will get a major upgrade in their next TV Deal. World Cup 2026 will be huge. It won't reach MLB/NFL levels, but the league is still only 25 years old. Seeing massive growth this decade. There was a time not all that long ago when clubs were folding compared to the expansion we see now.
2. Talent: MLS ain't catching the Prem or La Liga in 25 years. The expansion will lead to more academies, which will EVENTUALLY, help the player pool overall. The next big step is starting to get closer to salaries of Europe. Salary cap is the big hurdle there.
3. College Soccer is a joke: Are there a few OG's who went through college and had major success? Of course, but MLS also wasn't really viable with academies when they did. That is changing. "College Scholarships" argument is a bad one. Title IX, schools ain't adding mens soccer when womens soccer is already used as an equivalent for football. Delirious parents who think their kid is good enough to play in college are the same ones who are delirious enough to think they are good enough to go pro, which will change perceptions as MLS becomes more visible and mainstream.
Baseball has 162 regular season games, its slow, and at the moment player personalities are stifled and not marketed. Much easier to be a season ticket holder and go to all 18-20ish home matches in MLS.
So will MLS catch MLB in terms of popularity? Probably.
Will they catch them in Revenue? Probably not this decade.

The problem is the euro snobs won’t believe in metrics and will use biased emotion. MLS could objectively be up there with the European Big 5 and the euro snobs will tell us we aren’t seeing what we’re seeing

Needs a bigger media deal on the books before they can even ATTEMPT to make this call. Right now there is no consistent airplay on a major network. I know Fox Broadcast network has some matches but the times are irregular and not consistent on a day. You might get a match sometimes on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm but it's not every Saturday. You might get a 1pm game on Sunday.....here again, not every Sunday. Maybe there is consistency on FS1?
