#Phillies have increased their offer for #Orioles’ Machado, sources tell The Athletic. #Dodgers and #Yankees remain strongest. #Brewers fading, #DBacks on periphery.
Standard caveat applies: Trade talks are fluid, and one text or call can change dynamic of discussions.

One question looming with #Yankees: Could they make Andújar centerpiece of a trade for a starting pitcher? Some rival clubs question his defense at third base.

Im looking through fangraphs stats trying to see what's different with Gray...
One red flag is that he sucks in Yankee Stadium. 3.6 ERA on the road vs 8 at home. But beyond that, a lot of his peripheral stats are in line with his career number.
Here's what stands out..
Ground ball percentage is down nearly 6%
Line drive percentage is up 4%
Hard contact percentage is up 6%
Oppo contact is up 5%
The really big change is he throws his fastball (2 seam/4 seam) 34% of the time in 2018, down from his career usage of 55%. Instead the Yankees are having him throw a cutter 22% of the time which he's only thrown at 3.7% during his career.
I'm no pitching coach but it seems like the Yankees have taken away what made Sonny Gray successful. He's a ground ball pitcher through his sinking fastball.

makes sense. isnt it the yankees who also discourage fastball usage? or is that someone else?

As far as I know that's correct but tduecen may be able to speak to that better than I can.
The Astros staff threw the lowest percentage of fastballs last year but that's no longer the case with Verlander and Cole throwing a ton of fastballs this year.

Here's the issue with the Machado updates: The #Orioles have a pretty good idea what he can bring. But other teams haven't gotten a clear signal when the O's will act, or who'll make the final call, or whether this could stall as it goes up the chain. Sound familiar?

Teams should wait till last hour of deadline. O's are a terribly run org, they will cave for less or get nothing because of the price and look like even bigger jackasses.

Correct, Yankees throw the fastball less than other teams. Not sure the reasoning outside of for CC. Gray has sucked at home, I think the short porch intimidated him

Multiple executives told The Post that Andujar’s free-swinging penchant and poor defensive metrics are areas of concern, with one saying, “Andujar is a horrendous third baseman. This all feels like the Yankees building up a player’s value to trade him for a young, controllable starter and then they will revisit the issue of third base in the offseason with [Brandon] Drury, an outside third baseman or signing Machado.”
When presented this, GM Brian Cashman said: “That is completely false. I think [Andujar] is a hell of a player. We have said ‘no’ to him [in trade talks] not just this year but from Double-A on up. I have not included him any deals and that should say how I feel about him.”
quote:
We have been challenged many times to move him or coerced to move him. He is here because of what we think of him. And I mean ‘we.’ His makeup is off the charts. His work ethic is off the charts. His energy is off the charts. And his physical ability is off the charts. He is a major contributor, which is what we thought he’d be.”
quote:
“I don’t think there is a defensive issue now,” Cashman said. “I am not analytics-driven on this. I think he is an above-average player at that position at a young age. Whatever his deficiencies, he can improve on them, like Robinson Cano was able to develop into a bigger, better player for us. If he is a free swinger, his chase rate will improve. If he has defensive deficiencies, they will improve. Because he already has. Where he was and where he is now, I feel vindicated not moving him.
quote:
same as Cano and [Alfonso] Soriano,” Cashman said. “Those guys showed up and said, ‘No, my time is now.’ Miggy is doing that now. The proof (of how the Yanks feel about Andujar) is in the pudding. We are huge Andujar fans and we have demonstrated that by not trading him despite how many offers we have had to do so. The dude is only 23 years old. Whatever that narrative is (that the Yanks are building him up to trade him) is a false one. I am a big fan of this guy. Not just me. It is we are big fans.”

The Orioles and Indians have held discussions on a number of players, per Jon Morosi of MLB.com (Twitter link), who calls a trade of Adam Jones to Cleveland a “viable” possibility. The Indians, Morosi notes, have been in the market for a right-handed-hitting outfield bat.

Well they've gotten horrible production from the OF outside of Brantley I believe. Maybe get a couple from the O's?
They could always ask the Mets about Bruce again

Apparently Phillies have stepped up their pursuit of Machado. Would be a great fit but not sure how much of the future Philly will want to give up for a rental. I’m sure JP Crawford would go to Baltimore

IF the Phillies do it, you know they'll go all out to sign him after the season.

I hate to see Manny leave Baltimore but I wish this shite would hurry up.

The Braves have reportedly made an offer for Orioles superstar Manny Machado, but it doesn’t appear the shortstop will end up in Atlanta prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The Braves “are strictly on the fringes” of the Machado sweepstakes, tweets ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, who adds that they’re more concerned about upgrading their rotation.

5:14pm: The Orioles are “making progress and narrowing their focus” in Machado trade talks, Buster Olney of ESPN tweets. The Phillies and Brewers are said to be among the finalists; it isn’t clear who the other finalist(s) might be at this time.
SATURDAY, 1:19pm: The Phillies are “thought to be” ahead of the Yankees “and maybe most others” in the Machado derby, Heyman tweets. The Brewers, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Indians remain in the mix, though, per Heyman.
