The Nationals are engaging in discussions with rival organizations regarding the possibility of moving several veteran players, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (Twitter links). Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic hears similarly, writing in a subscription post that ownership is increasingly inclined to cut its losses (including the financial ones) to the extent possible.

Passan suggests that the focus would likely be on rental relievers. Ryan Madson ($7.5MM salary), Kelvin Herrera ($7.9375MM), and Shawn Kelley ($5.5MM) are all potential chips who’d be of interest to other organizations, perhaps bringing back some prospects and trimming some salary obligations. But whether it makes sense to stop there would make for a tough question.

Wonder if they would make others available such as Ryan Zimmerman, Harper (who if they lose him as a FA they only get a 4th round pick due to being over the tax) Gonzales, etc.

Probably would be difficult moving Harper with such little time left. It’s gonna be interesting to see if they try to win next year or maybe rebuild with playing a lot of young players.

The Cubs have recently scouted Rangers lefty Cole Hamels, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports (via Twitter) that Chicago appears to be “making inroads” to try to acquire Hamels from Texas. While Hamels has a 20-team no-trade clause, the Cubs are not on that list.

They've still got a lot of talent on that team. Doesn't have to be a rebuild. More like recognizing this year is a bust and restocking for next year by using a departing player. I don't see harper resigning with them. They'd get more by trading him than by getting a comp pick if he walks.

With Max/Strasburg and a young core of Rendon, Soto, Robles, and Turner they wouldn't need a lot

Right. They don't have to rebuild. They can just make some arrangements for life without Harper. I think they'd do well to get a solid feel for whether or not he'll re-sign and if not, trade him for something useful.

But they won't do it. They want to resign him and will feel like trading him would sour the relationship and cut the ties/ give him a taste of playing for a new team.

Bad news for the Reds today
quote:

Reds outfielder Jesse Winker will have surgery on his right shoulder and miss the remainder of the season, tweets C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic. The 24-year-old was placed on the disabled list yesterday with a subluxation in that shoulder. President of baseball operations Dick Williams told reporters that Winker is expected to be ready for Spring Training (Twitter link via John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer).

Winker has yet to tally a full season’s worth of games in the big leagues, but he’s been terrific at the plate when healthy. Through 471 plate appearances, he’s raked at a .299/.397/.460 clip, slugging 14 homers along the way. Like teammate Joey Votto, Winker has a remarkably discerning eye in the batter’s box, as he walked more times in 2018 (49) than he struck out (46).

Or you let him know you are trying to improve the team for next year, while giving him an opportunity to win a title.

It's happened many of times.

I don’t think the Nats are gonna trade away major pieces this offseason but I don’t expect them to be buyers this upcoming offseason. Robles and Kieboom will both be starting for them sometime next year.

They could move a few pieces, would like to see them make Gio available as he is an arm I wouldn't mind the Yankees going after.

Severino
Tanaka
CC
Happ
Gonzalez

frick Gray

Not going to happen because of the luxury tax, after getting Happ today the Yankees are done outside of maybe looking at a backup catcher.

Eat half of Ellsbury's contract, send Bird and an A ball pitcher, receive Jose Abreu.

I would. Would you?

Nah... I mean if we were talking 2 years ago, sure but Abreu is on the downslope of his career. His OBP has tanked the last few years along with his average and slugging, that is not a good sign for a player who is 31 already (allegedly)

I would just keep Bird who has shown signs of life lately

Yea but 2 years ago that’s another 40+ million. Unlikely you’d get anyone to take that contract then. Was just curious as I thought it would be an interesting trade offer.

Bird in July .269/.338/.463 if he could do that for an entire season he has a better season than Abreu right now. He has slowly improved after a ROUGH start where I berated him.

Braves also in play for Hamels as @StevePhillipsGM said. Hard to see them coming up with the $ though. Cubs seem likelier if the 2 at the moment.

Sources: #Cubs moving toward a Cole Hamels deal that would be centered around lower-level minor-league prospects and salary relief for #Rangers. Something to monitor: Class-A Myrtle Beach right-hander Rollie Lacy was scratched from tonight’s start.
