And the MVP is strictly an offensive award

Huh?

quote:

There seems to always be a debate about the definition of the MVP. What does the ballot say?

Dear Voter:

There is no clear-cut definition of what Most Valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the Most Valuable Player in each league to his team. The MVP need not come from a division winner or other playoff qualifier.

The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931:

1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.

2. Number of games played.

3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.

4. Former winners are eligible.

5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.

You are also urged to give serious consideration to all your selections, from 1 to 10. A 10th-place vote can influence the outcome of an election. You must fill in all 10 places on your ballot. Only regular-season performances are to be taken into consideration.

Keep in mind that all players are eligible for MVP, including pitchers and designated hitters

Mookie Betts: .310/.405/.605, 34 HR, 89 RBI, 105 R, 7.0 fWAR, 6.9 rWAR

Ronald Acuña Jr.: .339/.419/.568, 28 HR, 74 RBI, 113 R, 6.2 fWAR, 6.4 rWAR

Freddie Freeman: .336/.412/.576, 23 HR, 85 RBI, 104 R, 6.2 fWAR, 5.5 rWAR

Safe to say, Acuña won't run away with NL MVP anymore.

For Braves fans who have the sads that I left out stolen bases:

Acuña: 58 SB, 4.9 BsR (baserunning runs above average)

Freeman: 17 SB, 4.3 BsR

Betts: 10 SB, 2.7 BsR

For his wildly impressive SB total, Acuña is barely a more productive baserunner than Freeman. So there's that.

I'll reiterate, a player that goes 70/35, 70/40 or 75/35 will win the MVP. There is no way that someone who does something that historic, along w/all of his other numbers, will be denied the MVP.

All you mUh wAr people who are all over Betts are just gonna have to realize that. WAR is a good stat but it's not the end-all-be-all. Betts is having a very good season and would be MVP worthy in most seasons, but not this one. What Ronnie is doing is historic.

Did you really think that staff full of rehab pitchers would last the season? It about time for Seager to have another stint on the DL too
