It’s pretty much the same with the Rangers and Astros but the Astros have a little stronger presence due to the run they’re been on since 2017.
False. South Texas has been Astros territory for as long as I’ve been a kid. Same with the RGV.

So you’re biased right out of the gate. Nothing wrong with loving New Orleans, but try and be objective. NHL and MLB owners probably think differently than you and don’t favor a smaller city. Be realistic.

Houston’s best trait is how close it is to South Louisiana
Good grief

An NHL team in Houston would be just like Atlanta.
There’s no data to suggest this. Houston has never had an NHL franchise. Your disdain for big cities overshadows the success of say, the Chicago Blackhawks, LA Kings, NY Rangers, etc.

Smaller markets getting these teams is a big deal. It means more to them. Exactly why Austin would be better for NHL than Houston.
Of course. But greater Austin has about twice the population of New Orleans. Austin would be a MUCH better spot for pro hockey or baseball than NOLA by the numbers, and there’s more corporate dollars. The only drawback to Austin is the close proximity to DFW and Houston.

sure it means more to them, but smaller markets struggle to keep up support for sports franchises.

it's not the answer to everything, but it's very important to the financial success of a professional sports franchise.
TV money, attendance, merchandising, etc.
Owners and TV execs want as many potential customers as possible to maximize their possible profits.

You can sit here and quote every single sentence I say and respond individually. Doesn’t change the fact that Houston is generic. Keep fighting that fight. They don’t deserve an nhl team. Nola will always be superior to the rest of the country. Nobody is excited to go to Houston the way they are excited to go to New Orleans.

I don't disagree with that, but that's not what leagues and team owners look for in a home city.
all they care about is money.
more people = more money.
TV deals are cut based on number of subscribers to the network carrying the home games
(hypothetical network names)
RSN Houston and RSN NOLA will each get $X per "subscriber" from DirecTV, DISH, Cable Companies, etc.
People in San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Galveston, Beaumont, all will receive RSN Houston as part of their basic package whether they want it or not. , and RSN Houston will collect the money for each of those "subscribers".
People in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Biloxi and Pensacola will receive RSN NOLA as part of their basic package whether they want it or not. and RSN NOLA collects the money for those "subscribers"
RSN Houston right out the gate nearly doubles the subscribers that RSN New Orleans has. That's with not a single carrier in Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex also carrying the network.
Now you also need to sell tickets and merchandise.
within a 50 mile radius of downtown Houston, you have 8 million people (potential customers)
within a 50 mile radius of downtown New Orleans, you have 1.6 million people (potential customers)
Basic odds say you're going to find a lot higher TV ratings (which in turn means more ad revenue as well) with 13 million TV sets automatically available to you that 7.5 million.
Odds also say you have better chance at selling 15,000 tickets on any given night when 8 million potential buyers live driving distance from your arena vs only 1.6 million.

You almost sound like a troll at this point.

If that’s true, then New Orleans would already be a 4-sport city. It’s not. I’m glad you enjoy your culture, but it’s blinding you to reality, including how NHL and MLB owners operate. You might get more support standing on a street corner at this point.
A vibrant culture doesn’t make up for the lack of financial support, small population, smaller media market, etc. The ONLY thing NO can offer that Houston cannot is a tourist friendly downtown. If you think that tips the scales, cool. You’ll find out shortly that once again, MLB and NHL will expand elsewhere.
I’ll even add this. New Orleans is more like to lose a team before it gains one (in the Big 4).

The easy answer is the correct answer. MLB and NHL won’t do well long term in New Orleans. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pelicans move. NOLA or Northshore should probably have an AA or AAA minor league team though.

What about the rest of Louisiana? Surely the NOLA RSN would reach Shreveport LC and Monroe

NHL team would have to carry the "Gulf Coast" or "Gulf South" name and not identify strictly as New Orleans. Make it truly regional.

I counted them too.
Entire state of Louisiana, about half of Mississippi, Southern Alabama, to the other side of Pensacola is approximately 7.7 Million people.
San Antonio, Austin, Houston is over 14 million people
to get to a similar number of people, you would need the entirety of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, a chunk of Arkansas, plus a chunk of the Florida Panhandle.
that's 14 million people in a 35,000 square mile area as a potential customer base.
vs
190,000 square miles needed to get the same 14 million people to be potential customer base.

Lets Compare the existing Regional Networks that carry the 2 cities sport teams (Pelicans and Rockets/Astros)
According to this article
Gray Media launches the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network
the "Gulf Coast" Regional sports network is available to just under 10 million people
quote:
will provide unparalleled access to sports and entertainment for 9.7 million viewers across the Gulf South region. The network’s marque programming is the New Orleans Pelicans games.
and while this article doesn't give a population number, the map of their reach gives us a hint
Space City Home Network
There's roughly 42 million people living in that territory
even if they're only in 1/4th of those people's homes, it's still half a million more than the New Orleans network currently reaches.
