Time for some Joc to ATL news!

At 12 per, I wish the Braves would have signed him. It’s not a bad price.

the money isnt an issue. the length is. the dodgers are now paying for an often injured, mediocre outfielder whose saving grace is his defense and who knows how that will hold up as he continues to age, into his mid 30s

I think you are being a little harsh on Pollock. I wouldn't consider him mediocre or just a defensive guy.

He's not Jayson Werth. If he can play 130 games a year, he's a bargain. It is a big if though. He's a lot more than just defense.

He won't have to be an everyday player with the Dodgers. They need to bring up and play Verdugo and Toles this year too.

So you'd want to give 5 years, 60 million to a guy that hasnt played close to a full season since 2015. Its also a contract where the Braves would have lose their second round pick this year, and they have already lost their third round pick from the Coppy crap, and still have signing restrictions for international players.

The top is the 2017 and 2018 seasons for Markakis. The bottom is Pollack. Markakis also played 97 more games than Pollack during this two year stretch.

hes been very slightly above average at the plate for the last two years and has been worth a little over 5 WAR which is pretty much an average, everyday starter. if he could stay healthy and start getting on base at over 350 like he was doing 4 years ago than this is not as awful as it looks, even if signing him through his age 35 season is pretty bad regardless, but if hes what he was last year and striking out over 20% of the time...

Oh please, you know good and well 2.5 WAR over 110-115 games is better than an average starting position player.
It makes even more sense for a team with a deep outfield pool like the Dodgers. The injury risk is lessened for them because they have guys who can still give you decent production if/when Pollock is injured

At 5/60, I would. At 4/50, I'd do that too. Health is the only thing that's held Pollock back. It's a risk I'd be willing to take for the potential return.
It's not a crippling contract nor would it have prevented them from doing other things as well. A second round comp pick doesn't move the needle in either direction.

quote:hes a 3 to 3.5 WAR player over a full season. thats....a slightly above average starter. and this if hes healthy. which he never is. and thats because of his defense, and who knows how that will stand up when he is approaching 35, which is what hes signed through.

Man, 4/50 looks even better. Not sure what the fuss is about. That's only 12.5 a year which is chump change on a short contract. You basically maintain offensive production and improve a bunch defensively. He's not signed into his late 30s. If he flops, that's an easy contract to move as well.

joc pederson is a .228 hitter with 20 hr potential.
that is a bench player, not a starter.

Yeah, that is super cheap for an OF

hes 31, hes signed till hes 35. 31 is, statistically, the line of demarcation on the aging curve. every single one of those years is a decline year. i have my doubts on how he will hold up at the plate as he is starting to strikeout more and walk less
i wouldnt call swapping joc and pollock out as maintaining offensive production, its a legitimate step back in the same vein that pollock is a legitimate step forward over joc with defense.
its taking two fairly equal players value wise, for different reasons, right now and willingly paying more for one players decline

When your hitting .248 you wouldnt expect to get more than 350ish at bats
