Didn't the Yankees just pick up some more ISB slot money in a trade? The Cardinals still have like $3MM in bonus money but I don't think they're going to come close to spending it all. They'll probably trade pool money for prospects soon to teams looking to get in the sweepstakes for either of the two huge names. I don't think it's possible for one team to get both.

From Jeff Passan...

It's going to be 12 total guys...

quote:

BREAKING: Star prospect Kevin Maitan is one of 12 Atlanta Braves minor leaguers expected to be declared a free agent after league investigation, sources tell Yahoo Sports. In addition, Braves will suffer significant restrictions in 2019-20 and 2020-21 international FA classes.

quote:

Other penalties: The Braves will not be allowed to sign 14-year-old shortstop Robert Puason, the top player in the class of 2019, with whom they had illegally struck a deal. Atlanta also will lose a third-round draft pick in 2018 for offering inducements to a drafted player.

Jesus, they didn't just wander off the reservation, they sprinted.

ETA:

Yunior Severino $1.9MM

Maybe since he's already got $1.9MM, he'd like to come to the Cardinals for $300k?

Execs anonymously admitting that all teams do what the Braves did.

Yet MLB decides to make an example out of a random team. Bounty gate level idiocy here.

From everything I've read, Coppy was going further than the established norms.

AND they want to start cleaning up the Latin America operations and get away from kids being scouted by MLB clubs at like 12 and 13.

So, MLB was definitely looking for someone to make an example of, but the Braves made it easy for them.

From Passan on this topic:

quote:

As the investigation into the Braves unfolded, executives around baseball agreed that other teams disregard the rules in similar fashion to Atlanta. The Braves were simply the ones caught. And the severity of the penalties go beyond merely losing players and facing restrictions going forward: Between the signing bonuses and penalties for exceeding their bonus pool, the Braves will have paid well over $20 million to players who no longer are part of their organization.

I mean this is no different than what happened to SMU and football recruiting. Can’t be the ones caught.

First off, they get to keep their signing bonuses the Braves gave them. It wasn’t their fault the Braves messed up so it would make no sense for them to have to pay the money back. As for their next team: anyone can, theoretically, sign them. As far as team choice, they are free agents in the most narrow sense of the term.

There are limits, however, because as young, international players, their signings are subject to those caps on each team’s international bonus money which were imposed a few years back. Each team now has a “pool” of finite dollars they can spend on such players and, once that money is spent, teams are severely limited as to what they can offer an international free agent. Each summer the bonus pools are reset and it starts anew.

So teams can either use this years or next years bonus pools, but not both at the same time. So the clubs that were capped at $300k per player for this signing period aren't out of the running.

The Cardinals will have a chance. They have $4MM for next years bonus pool. They have connections to Maitan from scouting him previously and signing Alvaro Seijas from the same amateur program. I would have to think they're going to pursue signing him.

All of this information comes from Derrick Goold's story on the post dispatch website.

Yes.

But it also makes it a possibility that the same team could sign both Ohtani and Maitan. May still be unlikely, but definitely possible.

The market for the Braves free agents is larger than the market for Ohtani, probably by design of MLB. I will be interested to see how the 12 guys are valued on the FA market now with more clarity surrounding the spending restrictions and after they've had some time in the Braves org.

Also, I wonder what impact the previous bonuses will have on the offers extended by the negotiating clubs.
